I just got back from Jamaica where the greens are all some type of Bermuda. Every year I go there I have a real problem with distance control. I've tried all the three putters I use at home on bent greens but from the lightest to the heaviest they all give me a real problem with getting the speed correct (mostly really short).

I'm thinking maybe I need a putter with a lot more loft since the putts there seem to bounce a little at initial contact and this pretty much kills the roll and distance.

What do you guys who putt on slower Bermuda greens use? I never seem to adjust even when playing every day for a week. I never have this trouble when playing other non Bermuda courses even if the greens are much slower or faster then my home course.

You bring up an interesting point. The proper putter loft, like driver loft, is determined by individual technique.

A forward press of the hands and a rear ball placement will require a higher lofted putter.

The blades on the Bermuda grass are wider and thicker.
And it almost felt sticky after the sun had dry up the morning irrigation.
I like to use an older blade style putter ( like the Wilson 8802 or something similar ) with shorter shaft and a swing gate putting path.
The straight back straight through putting stroke produced shorter distance thus tend to make me stroke the putter harder, then everything went south from there.
Want to practice on the Bermuda greens ? Practice on the family room carpet ( builder's grade, medium density threads count ) is the closest to the feel of Bermuda grass.

Nothing else work better than spending some time on the local practice green to get the feel of the roll ( speed ).

When Walter "The Haig" Hagan played (early 20th Century), the tour greens were nothing close to the pool table surfaces enjoyed now. I read that he liked a putter with some loft.

That would cut severely into my drinking, scuba and sailing time while there. I'm looking for a painless fix like bending a putter.

I play Bermuda all summer long and the greens are rarely fast. Last year I switched to a putter with a reputation for getting a "good roll" (no evidence to that effect, but makes me feel better), in a style that allowed me to make a stroke where I place the ball a little forward in the stance and "lift the back of the ball." I know it doesn't actually lift it, but minimizing the initial backspin sure seemed to help both with distance control and direction.

On Bermuda greens its all about the grain. Putts can be almost twice as slow going against the grain as they are with the grain. Make sure you add grain reading into your pre-putt routine.

Try striking the ball at about its equator, using your normal putter and your normal stroke and you should be OK.
