I think Lardo could take Joey Chestnut down.

Male
winner ate 68 dogs and buns in 10 minutes ...

This is wrong on so many levels.

Oldprof..Why and yes uhhh.., the same thought ?

Xbanker, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "yes uhhh.., the same thought ?" Can you clarify this?

As to why I think the hotdog eating contests are "wrong on so many levels," I can only say the following:

1. When I was growing up my parents taught me I should be thankful for food and respect it. There is very little respect for food in eating contests.

2. My Mom always impressed on me the fact that many people in the world suffer from chronic hunger and malnutrition. This is another reason not to make a display of gross overeating. It's far better to share food than to gorge on it in some mindless contest.

3. Stuffing yourself with 68 hotdogs and buns in ten minutes can't be good for your digestive system, although you may recover with no apparent long-term consequences.

4. As you are probably aware, the United States is suffering from an obesity crisis among both children and adults. We need to promote the concept of eating in moderation, and not glorify feats of overconsumption and excess.

Call me old-fashioned and stodgy if you like, but I get no enjoyment from these hot dog eating contests.

Oldprof,

I think you pretty much summed up my thoughts in your finely worded response. I too am from an old-fashioned background.

I'm outraged about the moral outrage directed at a contest that celebrates the Great American Hot Dog. The consumption of 68 hot dogs cannot be done without immeasurable commitment, conviction and yes, passion.

Without hot dogs there would be no repository for cheek flesh, sphincters and abscessed meats. It's not like burning perfectly good fuel for NASCAR!

For crying out loud people. Why are you getting so bent out of shape over a hotdog eating contest. Youse guys need to chill out. It is a holiday tradition held on the 4th. It's not like they are promoting eating 68 hot dogs per day. Although I don't enjoy watching it, it is a holiday tradition.

The irony of being "old fashioned" and chastising a tradition that started in 1916 is not lost on me.

I just gotta say...some of the grossest pigs around. I can't understand the fascination with this nor the money paid.

In a way, I can wrap my head around Man vs. Food but this sheesh I can not.

I agree but there is a following - it was reported on local radio that the television audience for this event was greater than any single baseball game broadcast on the fourth.

Oscar Meyer patented a meat comminutor in 1959. Its basically a set of spinning blades in a drum. I've seen one in action. It's poetry in motion.

Man, I thought the dog competition was bad enough. I just saw on the news the Snuff Competition in Germany with a table full of guys trying to cram 5 oz. of snuff up their nose. What's next the World gerbil tube contest?

I find it disgusting to watch. i think they should have to eat the dogs the way they were meant to be eaten,in the bun, no soaking the in water, etc.
What used to be a fun little tradition has become a gross spectacle.
I'm old fashioned too,but they used to have pie eating contests on Little House on the Prarie, for God's sake, lighten up.
