Don't buy what you can't afford.
Why is that so complicated?!

+1

I agree with that, but there are obviously situations where people have a reduced income or no income through no fault of their own after purchasing their houses. We don't know the circumstances of this particular person's foreclosure.

Not wanting to come off as an ass, but does anyone know what an SSGT.'s pay scale is while in Iraq? Does anyone know the amount of the bonuses they get for going back again and again?

$3012.90 a month with his years of service.

this is more than likely his base pay before allowances. You have to include his housing allowance (values are determined by the area of the country you live in), substance allowance, hazard duty pay since he served in Irag. He's probably making close to $50k after you add all that in.

And that would still be a disgraceful salary for someone who is putting his life at risk in the service of his country.
Especially if you compare it to (say) what they pay some half smart ,wet behind the ears, Wall street types who spend their
days making guesses with other people's money.

Exactly, besides, a staff Sergeant (E6) in the Marines, Army, or Technical Sergeant in the Air Force make $3416 at 12 years (where did it say he had 12 years?) of service...plus as mentioned above, there are what we called "Separate Rations", which is money for housing and food.

Now, I love the military service having grown up in a military family and having served in the early '70s, but we do not know this sergeant's financial circumstances. Perhaps, he was not
well guarded with his money. Using his status as a member of our fine military does dis-service to those who have not had their homes repossessed/foreclosed upon.

As a 14 year vet, you don't join b/c of the pay. We all know that enlisted salary is not all that great. However, no one forced us to enlist.
You take an oath to die in the defense of the country. There's no clause that states you're going to get rich doing it.

No doubt you are right in this assertion, however, your pay should be commensurate with the risks ,locale and absences from your loved ones.
Even if you compared it to pay levels on off shore drilling platforms ( as some sort of example).
Anyway, enough of my 2 cents worth.

One of the first things you'll hear after joining the military, "The U.S. (fill in branch of service) didn't issue you a family!"

what I don't get. Why buy a house when gov. housing is free and you get hola/cola if you are overseas or base housing is full?

You can save money and be able to pay off a mortgage you can afford.

People in the armed services ( military brat here) should have no advantage over other Americans as far as housing goes.

Government houseing ISN'T free unless you're single and you live a barracks. If a military person has a family, the military pays housing and food allowance (plus combat pay if in a combat theater).

If the family lives in base housing, the money given to the service person for houing goes right back to government. If the family lives off-base, he pays a lease or mortage like anyone else. If his mortgage or lease is less than the housing given to him, he can pocket the balance.

My son is due back from Korea in October and will be stationed at Luke AFB in Phoenix, and we have discussed this already.

But, 'enlisted' is not the way of today's military; it is 'the reserves'. These are the ones being called up and sent over to the "wars".

Why did they sign up......way back before the "wars" started?

People in the military for the money would not make good soldiers, I don't think.

Also, you can't say "but we're paying baseball players XXX much more!" No, WE are not. WE are paying soldiers. Baseball is a private enterprise, and they can command whatever price they like.

If you think those guys shouldn't make the money that they do, stop watching/buying/being a fan. It's not my business, nor yours what people do privately with their money.

To reiterate-- people should NOT be in the military for the money. I think advertising, "We'll pay back your student loans!" and whatnot is a big mistake. Soldiers ought to be supported comfortably, but if you're in it for the money you're not doing the right thing.
