It appears that even a darn good round of Par, tomorrow, will not let a lot of the guys play on the weekend! A lot of 'big names' are probably packing their bags tonight, knowing that even if they shoot 2-3 under , they are most likely gone. "SAN FRANCISCO – At the 1993 U.S. Open at Baltusrol a little known South African named Ernie Els struggled to opening rounds of 71-73 and advanced to the weekend only because of the U.S. Golf Association’s 10-shot rule, which stipulates that anyone within 10 of the lead makes the cut. Els rebounded to shoot 68-67 on the weekend to tie for seventh and earn an exemption into the 1994 Open, which history will show the Big Easy won to kick-start what would become a Hall of Fame career. This is notable because for this year’s championship the USGA has ditched the 10-shot rule and will go with the standard top 60 and ties cutoff for weekend play. The rule was changed, however reluctantly, during last year’s meeting of the Executive Committee prior to the U.S. Open at Congressional to combat increasingly large weekend fields and the USGA’s reluctance for a two-tee start on Saturday and Sunday. “There are pros and cons to the ten shot rule,” Davis said. “Ultimately we did it because we felt that all things being equal, that the process outweighed the cons because we just felt like we could get ourselves in a bind at some point with a very large cut, which would mean the final two rounds, Saturday and Sunday, we'd have to go in groups of three or we'd have to go 1 and 10 tees, and we just didn't want to do that for the U.S. Open.” The rule change seemed to catch some players by surprise, but Davis said the adjustment was noted on this year’s application and in each participant’s registration packet. At the 1996 U.S. Open 108 players made the cut at Oakland Hills and in 2010 at Pebble Beach there were 83 players around for the weekend. Currently, 113 players are within 10 strokes of leader Michael Thompson..."

The 10 shot rule does not apply in this weeks open - from the article you copied : This is notable because for this year’s championship the USGA has ditched the 10-shot rule and will go with the standard top 60 and ties cutoff for weekend play.

Seems like an odd year to get rid of it. The bay area doesn't get any severe weather so there aren't going to be any delays and the tournament has as much day light as possible because SF sits so close to the ocean. There really isn't any concern about getting the players around the course on time

Do groups of three, the more players the better. Plus the all day TV coverage would be better, I could waste more of my day if more folks were playing. Is it not realistic that you could be watching groups of 3 & 4 this weekend??

I really like the 10 shot rule in majors...so what if they have to start the back of the pack at 7:00 am. It still gives those with a horrible first round a fighting chance to go low on Friday and make the weekend. It seems there are always players that do turn it around to get in and make a paycheck, some even moving significantly. I wonder if the committee had pressure from the networks; or if the impact on the purse, paying 60 guys versus 80+/- influenced the decision?

My take is that is all about finishing by (around) 6PM on the east coast. They mentioned that in the past 100+ players made the cut due to the 10 shot rule. Add the 3 hour difference between east and west coast and they would never finish by 6PM playing in twosomes. The threesomes yesterday were averaging around 5 hours. Having said that I still prefer the 10 shot rule in majors. If a guy that's 10 shots back gets hot in a major he could easily cut that deficit in half in one day. I say run the telecast into prime time if needed. If the top players on tour are in contention the viewers will stay and watch. I personally enjoyed watching golf until 10PM last night.
