Based on the replays, I don't understand how he was able to drop on the right side of the hazard. His ball entered at the BACK of the hazard, not the leftside.

It appeared to me he was given a very favorable ruling, even if it was a lateral hazard.

One of the options you have when taking a penalty from lateral hazard is to go the opposite side of the hazard, equal distant from the hole and drop within 2 club-lengths. This is what Rory did.

Rule 26-1 c. As additional options available only if the ball last crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

That's my point it wasn't on the other side it was in the back of the hazard.

Do you know where the equidistant point on the opposite margin was? Could he have been cutting the corner and last crossed near the elbow or further toward the green? This illustrates the opposite margin if it last crossed at the earliest spot.
