Do the majority of people in Canada speak English, even if French is there first language?

Yes. Even in predominant French areas, the majority will skip back to English once you start talking. There might be a few areas where it's only French, but I haven't seen/heard it.

Approximately 25% of Canadians speak French as their mother tongue and I would be surprised if more than 5-10% of those people (over the age of 12) couldn't also communicate verbally in English.
Northern and Rural Quebec would probably be the only locations you might find uni-lingual French speaking CDNs.
By contrast, an English speaking person can enjoy and get around in Montreal nearly as well as a French speaking person.

The short answer is yes - they watch english TV and go to english movies etc., etc. there was a period back in the late 70's & 80's where they were reluctant to speak English. But there has been a 180, as its now considered an asset. That being said they protect they're language and culture and its place in Canada. I am a uniligual Anglo raised and educated onthe East Coast, married to a French Canadian. Its fabulous prov. in many ways but very challenging politically. Individually French Canadians are as good as it gets - they are intelligent,creative, studious, hard working and honestly the most entrepreneurial I've met anywhere. They work hard and play harder. When they want something they go for it - full throttle.
