Following on from my previous post about how to transfer handicap from one club to another, I have another one for you guys.

I left my old club on 31st March where I had an official handicap of 9. I am still in the joining process of another club and don't expect that to be completed for another month or so.

If I enter an internet-advertised golf competition today, do I have a legal handicap? If I do, how long is it valid for?

Thanks

Stu

OK, say I'm the organizer of this golf competition and some player wants to enter with a handicap that hasn't been revised since he went inactive at his past club on 3/31. I don't think I'd be allowing this, at all, in order to protect the field.

Thanks Mike - anyone know what the official ruling would be? Is it down to the competition organisers as to what defines an official handicap?

3 months gap is an inactive period, it's up to the tournament sponsor to decide which way they will take your case.
They may use your handicap index from March 30th or they may assign you an index for the tournament.

Why don't you ask the tournament organizer for detail ? If you knew you would have this problem why didn't you join some internet or local club just to hang your index for a few month when you plan to play a tournament ?
And yu should be able to update the index with past rounds, once you have access to the input system.

Thanks for that Release - you're suggesting that 3 months is an inactive period - could you provide any official link on that?

I didn't know I'd have this problem as I didn't expect it to take 3 months + to join the new club. It's the premier course in my area and they have a long application process involving multiple interviews, playing-in round, members vote, etc.

I'm in the UK, so not sure if things work differently for you, but joining a golf club is a minimum 12 month subscription here. An internet site would only support a non-official handicap based on submission of scorecards so that's not an option either.

I can certainly ask the event organisers but I posted on here to see if there was any official ruling on this to save me re-explaining every time I enter a comp :)

Cheers

Stu

Stu,

Your situation over there might be entiely different than here, for one thing, there are very little waiting time for new members applying to almost any private clubs recently except for the few " by invitation only" type of golf clubs.
We check with our individual State PGA Association for special situation like yours and many will provide an answere on their web site.
There is no official ruling as far as I know it for determining your situation. It really is what the Tournament sponsor / official duty to determine what to do in your case.

Your best bet is to phone in to your local ( where the tournament will take place ) governing body of golf and ask away. Their answer will have more weight than any other source. Then again, the final determining agent will be the Tournament Official. When you get an answer from the tournament official, get it in writing or in the email form in case anyone question your status for the tournament.

We, over this side of the pond could get an internet index ( USGA ) after join a local club ( $40 annual fee ) and have an official index.
Souds like you folks over the other side have different way of handling things than we do here.

Stu - have you actually been inactive for 3 months, or just not an official member? If you have been playing golf and have your scorecards, could you apply to enter the tournament using your last official handicap plus your recent scores?

Stu, you should ask this question on the Rules forum. Somebody there will know the exact answer, providing there is just one correct answer.

Stu,

I would have the handicap chairman of your old club let the tourney directors know you were a member in good standing etc. might help.

two months of inactivity isn't much, besides you are between clubs, so legit reason.

I checked with my local golf authority and apparently as soon as you are no longer a member of an affiliated golf club, you no longer have an official handicap.

Ahh well, will keep my fingers crossed that the process of getting into my new club speeds up!!

Thanks for everyone's input.
Cheers

Stu
