I average a 90 score for 18 holes .Next month will be a full year since I started playing.I remember those days shooting 130 almost a year ago.Its good to see I am finally progressing.Just wanted to compare my progress to some of you guys when you guys started out playing. Is 90 decent for a year of playing?

What was you guys average score after picking up the clubs after a year?

For the recreational golfers, I had only seen one case which the new golfer improved to breaking 90 consistently within the first 12 month of playing golf.
If you truly averaging a score of 90 for a USGA rated regulation 18 hole golf course( which is roughly a bogey score ) in the first 12 month of playing golf. You are a pretty good golfer.

I dont have a year in for a while yet, but when Im playing seriously I can keep it in the low 90s (92ish).
Problem is that if I get paired with an idiot I pay more attention to everything else other than playing my game so I do worse. I have to go alone at a time of day when Im sure to play by myself and then I can focus on my game and score well.

I was doing well after just a few months. I could keep the ball in the center of the fairway most of the time. But I keep monkeying with swing changes and screwed myself over for 6 weeks or so and have had to revert back to my basic failsafe swing and start again.

Played a round yesterday and had a lot of really great fairway shots...kept it down the middle most of the time. But this latest swing change added about 15-20% more distance and it caused me to get into some trouble I dont usually get into, which left me with some trouble shots I didnt account for.
An example would be on a shot to the green I knew I couldnt get to the green with a 5 wood so I wanted to lay up 75 yards or so in front and then take a nice pitch shot and hopefully end up with a par. What happened instead was I got enough unexpected yardage to instead hit a greenside bunker. Im not a great bunker player so it took a couple tries to get out, which cost me enough strokes to blow the hole entirely.
Now I have to hit the range and get my distances for all my clubs down again before Im going to be able to get back to the consistent game I had before.

I think personally that if a person isnt breaking 100 regularly and getting closer to 90 after a year of playing they might want to find another hobby.

If you have the choice to increase distance, by all means go for it and the refinement could come later.
Do not forsake the distance for control at the early development stage of the game. I consider anyone played golf for less than 3-4 years as a newbie in the game. So if any new golfer whom does not touch their golf clubs weekly either practicing or playing and thus not break 100 is normal.

I started in 1965 when I was 13, but had a pretty good instructor (Dad). Could not break 100, but I was also involved in little league baseball and competitive swimming.....busy l'il dude. 2 years later at age 15, I started playing more with my Mom, who was an upper 80's shooter. I could blow it by her but she'd drum me in scoring....the light went on and I started learning the value of course management and the short game. Anyway, I started breaking 100 but then quit golf for 10 years, focusing mostly on competitive swimming. I got a swimming scholarship to college, graduated in 1973, and did not get back into golf until 1978. I first broke 90 in 1980 and then broke 80 for the 1st time in 1999, and have busted the 70 barrier 2 times since then.

abridged history of Uncle Steve, Part I........

I guess my comment was more directed to adults with the strength to even drive a ball far enough to break 100.
I have a friend who has been "playing" for 25 years and he has broken 100 maybe 3 times in all that...and it was complete accident....and I honestly think he cheated because I catch him all the time taking 3-4 tee shots and not counting penalty strokes. To me the score isnt legitimate if one is taking ANY mulligans or not counting penalties.
25 years and I dont think the guy has an HONEST score under 100.

His 'philosopy'...if you want to call it that...is that we dont golf to get every shot right but pretty much only to see those great shots that happen every now and then.
This viewpoint is what keeps him from actually getting better. He refuses to take the driver out of his bag knowing it gets him into trouble 75% of the time. Sure he has hit a 330 yard drive dead down the middle...I watched him do it myself 2 weeks ago. And I also watched the REST of his drives that round fly into the trees around the 270 mark. All the while Im 3 and 5 wooding my ball off the tee about 200-220 down the middle of the fairway.
The hardest hole on the course is a nasty par 4 with an elevated tee that has a very narrow corridor of trees you have to shoot thru....with the fairway being so far away that its only the longest, straightest shooters that are even going to get there. He blasted his ball over into a corn field with his driver while I 5 wooded mine into the rough short of the fairway. Easy enough to figure out who took a penalty stroke and had to drop and who had a chance of still making par.

I guess when I say if one hasnt broken 100 in a year Im assuming an adult of at least average strength who actually has some motivation in getter better...ie getting out in the yard 4 nights a week and practicing and going to the range at least twice a week in the beginning.
If a person isnt better after so long a time it seems like they may be wasting their time. Unless, of course, they just like hitting the ball around in the grass.

I suppose it can also be the fault of the instructor, if they have one.
I know two guys at a sports shop who both are golf instructors.

The first guy is amazing. He is very much to the point. He doesnt waste time on small talk and BS but tells you what he sees wrong and tells you how to correct it the first time.

The second guy is some sort of peyote smoking bearded mountain top guru sort who gives advice like 'be the ball' and 'see the hole' and tells you if youre actually trying to correct some mechanical flaw in your swing that youre 'thinking too much'.

I feel really sorry for the new golfer who runs into the second guy. He's most likely into golf instruction solely for the money and not really helping anyone.

I told the second guy that I broke my right wrist and it healed incorrectly so it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to grip the club exactly like we're supposed to. I have tried it 100 times and it makes it so I cant keep the club on plane in the backswing. So I have to use my own modified grip and then pay very close attention to my backswing so I stay on plane. He still complained about my grip.
When I mentioned it to the first guy...the good instructor....he took the information and helped me a bit with the grip so it was still working well but closer to normal.

There are great instructors out there. The guy who is my 'instructor' lives in another state and has helped me just by phone calls. Its one hell of an instructor who can get a new player scoring 92 within 9 months without ever actually seeing his swing. I wish they were all like that.

Hardly any club-golfer scores these days are correct: for various reasons (can't walk back to the tee because it takes too much time and holds up everyone else...), breaking rules, gimme putts, etc....

I estimate the average club golfer score to be 108. Double bogey golf. From the appropriate tee boxes, not the tips (e.g., 5400 yards for a healthy male who hits a good drive 225).

In all the years I have played with pupils and friends and non-friends, and observed the good ones and the strugglers, club champ, etc., I have rarely seen ANY legitimate score under 80.

When a tournament was conducted at my city course for "semi-pros" (scratch golfers and other assorted mini-tour players), the best scores were 75 and up.

The tips are only 6600 yards.

Ive been playing for 10 years or so but many of those years I have gotten less than a dozen rounds in; I drive the ball pretty well and my short game is good but my irons are terrible. I would say I am in the 90's but there are rounds I shoot over 100. For me though, golf is a method of relaxation and I dont stress out about scoring well. In fact, I played last night with an old friend....we chatted so much that 4 or 5 holes went by and we had forgotten to record any scores...for me that is what golf is all about. If you are out there with good people, or even by yourself for that matter, there is never a wasted moment on the golf course...no matter what your score is.

Another thing I have learned through much experience...unless you are playing for money, dont worry about the other guys score. When he tells you the scores and you know his isn't right....just tell him nice round and give him a wink If he get's it, that's probably the last time he cheats around you.
