My friend gave me his year old irons to regrip. The tape is not coming off in one or 2 pieces. More like a hundred. Can't find that gadget with the curved blade anywhere amongst my club building tools for whatever reason. Is it okay to put a fresh piece of tape over the existing in it's entirety? I'm thinking that tape isn't going anywhere and the bond between the new tape and old tape can't be any worse than the bond between fresh tape and shiny chrome, right?

At least it's not that "gummy" stuff OEM's are using. That is a true pita. I use Goo Gone. Wipe some on let sit a few minutes, wipe it off, repeat

"Can't find that gadget with the curved blade anywhere amongst my club building tools for whatever reason. "

Here's how to make the tool..............................
you will need the following:
1. one butt piece of a steel shaft approx. 5 - 6" long
2. a butt piece of old rubber grip 3 - 4" long
3. a chop saw or angle grinder.
4. a belt sander
Cut one end of the steel shaft butt at 30º - 45º angle then cut off square about 1/3" of the angle cut.
Now sharpen the square cut off on the outside with your belt sander and install the grip on the other end of the tool.

To use:
Take a tip piece of a steel or graphite shaft approx 1" long and run a drywall screw through it. Cut a disk approx.2" dia. out of a margarine tub lid and run the screw through the middle of the disk. Screw this peg into the edge of your workbench.

Place the butt of the tape covered shaft over the peg and hold it there with your left hand. With the tool on your right hand scrape off the old grip tape cut and rotate shaft till all the tape is off. The peg keeps the shaft from slipping and avoids cutting yourself. If left handed you can reverse the hand directions. Heating the tape with a heatgun or torch makes the job easier.

That's it!

Check in the home and garden section or Harbor Freight Tools.
Think it's called curved pruning knife.

Is he paying you for this? If no, then yes.
