I got one and it still burns me.

Playing in the club championship I hit my tee shot into a fairway bunker. Normally this isn't super bad as the bunker is sloped so balls collect in the center leaving a dicey but manageable wedge over the water to the green.

I walk over to the bunker and can't find my ball. I finally locate it. it is under the lip of the back of the bunker resting on a ledge creating when some well-meaning but clueless groundskeeper weed eated the perimeter of the bunker creating a furrow in the sand! I chopped it to the bottom of the bunker and still a bit peeved air-mailed the green and managed a sloppy double.

It took me five minutes to rake that bunker so anyone behind me wouldn't suffer my fate.

I play on inconsistent greens. That's pretty shoddy.

From the standpoint of His/Her not hand raking the area after the trimming, not the actual trimming, I agree.

For me no shot is more difficult than trying to hit a delicate shot around the green when the grass is "clumpy". You know, thick tufts of grass that stop the club dead sandwiched between hard pan bare spots that make the club bounce. I don't mind thick rough around the greens be it needs to be consistent.

The bunkers at one course I play are just not maintained. They have become the as hard a pavement. I suggested to the pro shop that if you are not going to maintain them make them grass bunkers instead. Got the all to usual "If you don't like it play somewhere else"

The problem with longish grass is that it is natural and nature has a will of its own

Gee, I'm better out of the hardpack -- I grew up on that. But when I play a nicer course and the sand is fluffy -- cover your ears, since there WILL be foul language

Well that sucks Walt!! All too often i feel the rules assume perfect course conditions when that is not the case. A ball in a divot is a perfect example

I had one a couple rounds ago where the ball chased into a fairway bunker. The ball should have rested up against the top of the railroad tie (pond on the other side), but there was a couple feet deep hole no more than a cup's circumference that somehow the water had eroded and the ball dropped down into the bottom of it in the "bunker". I thought about then posting here then figured some rule natzi would tell me a 100 stroke penalty applies so i didn't bother LOL

I agree that shoddy groundwork does really affect our game but if you expect perfect conditions for every shot, it really is impractical. No amount of money and labour on course maintenance can prevent you winding up in a fairway divot made on the hole by a person playing 10 minutes before you.

It does make life hard but that for me is the true challenge of golf. Learning to play different and challenging conditions is what makes for good golfers.
