ORIGINAL: BigDaddy13440 Cutter - I've got the same issue, mine is a Grade 2/3, had it for 17 years (since it was diagnosed), supposedly 1/3 of all people have it to some extent from birth. I can't sit or stand for extended periods of time, I'm constantly fidgeting, moving around to alleviate pressure. I've also found I can't sleep in one position for very long, else I wake up nearly a cripple (takes 2-3 minutes of hobbling around before I can walk "normally"). What Stage are you at? Luckily, mine's been stable since '95, haven't needed anything other than some chiropractic work to alleviate any lingering issues. A friend's GF just had three of her verts fused, and they shaved off a portion of the spinal canal, alleviating the pressure on her spinal cord. Less than 6 weeks later, she's back to work. Hope your surgery and recovery go well. Mine's a grade 2, Chuck. What you are explaining to me is very similar to what I have going on, but I have episodes where the back just goes into spasm and I can hardly stand. let alone ambulate, which makes work a bit difficult to tend to. The biggest is problem, in the past 6 months or so, is that the episodes are coming w/much greater frequency. And it'll happen doing the least little thing (this time I was reaching to wash in the shower..............no comments from the peanut gallery ). SO I am on pins a needles when not in a episode for fear of moving the wrong way, and I have no idea which way is the wrong one I hurt the back two Sunday's ago and I am still in that episode, which the duration is the longest I've ever had. So, given increase of frequency, duration and the fact my doc has told me for years I'd need a surgery at some point.................here I am, waiting in line. Thanks fr the kind words...............hope to be back soon as well

ORIGINAL: Potbunker Paul, very sorry to hear this. The timing for a golfer stinks but the relief you will receive will be worth it. Just follow docs and PT'ers orders. The season I missed to avoid back surgery I used on the putting green making a transition to a long putter. That probably doesn't interest but possibly a belly putter may help take stress off the back and something you might be able to do earlier. I'm still in recovery mode from my surgery and have been using this time to clean out the unused closet and will be doing some building soon for motivation. I did also just make a few purchases. Keep us posted on your surgical date and recovery. I was hoping to do this some Nov after a fruitful golf season, but it wasn't to be. And yes, my wife is an RN, so I will be under a closeful watch and will behave. Surgery will be the week of the 11th or 18th, more than likely. Seeing a doc that was referred to me by a friend who works in my company in the spinal division (I do heart stuff) on the 5th, hopefully sooner if possible. 2 day hospital stay, 4 weeks before I go back to work, limited duty. Will fill in some details as I rest post-procedure. Thanks for the post, Steve

So, given increase of frequency, duration and the fact my doc has told me for years I'd need a surgery at some point.................here I am, waiting in line. Thanks fr the kind words...............hope to be back soon as well When I was first diagnosed, I did the whole chiropractor deal, and did some intensive PT with electrical stimulation. Or, at least until the insurance company told me I couldn't do both. I was so used to the tingling in my lower back (and radiating down my left leg) that when I was having the stimulation done, my level was so far past normal, the therapist couldn't believe I wasn't spasming, I don't know what "number" was typical, but say on a scale of 1-40, the average person could stand about a 22-25.... I was about 35-36. Gradually, I wasn't getting any further relief, and I found that stretching on my own at home was doing me as much good as the PT, if not more so. My pain threshold elevated, to where things that bothered me before no longer did. Thankfully, I've been stable for a long time, and just get the occasional twinge and/or numbness radiating down my leg. I've found that taking as hot a shower as I can stand, and using a pulsating shower head focused on my lower back really loosens everything up - I stretch and twist while doing it almost every morning. IF I'd followed the doctor I initially saw when it "happened" (remember, I supposedly had the Spondo since birth), I'd have had my LG-S1 vertebrae fused, possibly with rids in my back. IF it's getting worse, and you can't deal with it any longer, by all means consider the surgery. In my case, I was able to push through, and am able to cope without surgery. Whichever way works for you, prayers are being sent your way. And, as a PS.... that Precept EC 9* I got from you about 5 years ago is still being gamed by my friend's son, he's a sophomore in high school this coming year.... and is shooting low 40's for 9 holes.

I have some discomfort most of the time, but the problem now is that it's so unstable. I am afraid to move for fear of the spasms that come w/o rhyme nor reason. And the episodes are now putting me out for longer periods of time. I've been the PT/trainer/massage/Chiropractic route and it has, unfortunately, ran it's course. Thanks for the prayers............I will take them all And your son still hits that EC head, huh? That's awesome! I always liked the way that head set up, but never hit it. Another regretful reverse-ho move that benefitted someone else. Cool

Just now reading this Paul and want to extend my best wishes/thoughts and definitely prayers to and for you. I had a broken neck couple decades ago (collision at home plate)with part of my hip bone removed for the fusion and everything has been good with little too no arthritis. I later had a Deadlifting injury whereas I herniated S1 and S2 which ended my weightlifting and a few other activities but I wouldn't let them operate. Luckily I have a huge pain threshold and one of my best friends being a chiropractor kept me together for years. Having moved from Chattanooga to KY I haven't had the free services of adjustments/heat/electro/ultrasound whenever I needed it and I can really tell a difference. Some days I just can't twist and turn much less swing a golf club. That pain Big Daddy talked about shooting down the leg I am very familar with and my right thigh is considerably smaller than my left due to the damage. Again my friend the best of luck to you!!!

Hope things goes as well as you can expect I've had the op myself and I'm still playing, meanwhile there's nothing wrong with a little retail therapy

Did you get a visit with the doc yet or any more word on what will take place for you and when? I've suffered through some of this also so I have at least some idea of what you might be going through. So hang tough as relief is on it's way.

Paul, not sure where you are in the process, hopefully recovery mode. Regardless, I wanted to keep the thread going and let you know you are still in my thoughts and prayers.
