This is one of my favorite courses!!!! I love all the water in play, 18 has to be one of the toughest holes, although they probably need to make it longer. They shouldn't be going in with 8 and 9 irons.

why, if its that tough, why would you think it needs to be lengthened?

everyone thinks that to toughen a hole you need to lengthen it-wrong. make the rough more penal, pinch in the fairways, make the players think instead of hitting the **** out of it and then being able to wedge out and hold the green cause the rough isn't that thick. Length is not the only factor that makes a hole hard.

18 is playing 462 this year, so they hit 310 leaves them 9 iron most liklely, a finishing hole should have a much longer club in. Should be at least 7 thru 5 iron.

why?

quail hollow 478
Bay Hill 458
Harbour Town (par 4, 452 yards)
Riviera (par 4, 475 yards)

\
those are two of the top 5 finishing holes on tour and the yardages are pretty similar.

if they are hitting 7-5 irons then its probably a par 5 and then everyone would say that the hole is still too short

thats the key

when the prov1 was introduced ( whenever it was) Ernie used it at Kapaluia and was hitting it past everyone at least 20 yards if not more. most of the problem these days is with the ball, yes the pro's hit it further than us mortals, but the ball has a lot to do with it.

With the possible exception of Harbour Town, not that I'm even crazy about that one, I hate Pete Dye courses. Gimicky crap to my eye, but as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Cutting down those rare surviving elm trees at Whistling Straits should have put Pete Dye in prison for at least ten years. One would have to be a true troglodyte to do what he did.

As for the 17th at the TPC, all it needs is a windmill and a dynosaur's mouth. Donald Ross would wet himself laughing if he ever saw that. He'd never believe it was supposed to be on the level and not an elaborate practical joke.

Pretty sure I read Tiger was using a Proto ProV1 or aversion not available to the masses when he won at Pebble Beach (US Open) by a mile.
Along with the extra distance off the tee, nobody was holding those greens that day except him.

As close to a fix as you can get in golf, imo and the beginning of the Tiger Legend.

was he still with titleist then or had he jumped ship? I remember watching the tournament at Kapalua and Ernie was just killing it past everyone else-I think that was when the 983 driver first came out as well and everyone was saying it was the driver-not realizing it was more then ball.

Not sure on that.
I can't find the article anymore

I do remember Ernie as well maybe he was using the production model and most likely the first to "showcase" it as that tourny is at the start of the season.
