I've been through a lot of irons the last couple of seasons. Back in 06, I think, I got a set of Wishon 752tc built up on Apollo Humps and kept them in the bag for over 4 seasons. As they piled up some wear, I decided to find something else for a few years. Since 2010, I've played the 870ti, Acer XP905, Pinhawk SL, DTG Ti50, Wishon 560MC. All were good, and the 560s were easily my favorite when shafted on the Wishon Superlight Steel shaft in S. They were forgiving, accurate, and I particularly liked the feel on short shots around the green. On top of that, Wishon is a great company that offers great support. So I intended to either build up another set of 752s or try the 979SS. Still haven't done that because . . .

FGI is such a sick place that I got some wonderful deals on Dynacraft CNC Forged, Maltby TE, and Maltby Tricept TU. The Tricept heads I grabbed almost as an afterthought to the TEs. I used Maltby heads for years before I played Wishon, so I was interested in finding what was new at Golfworks.

The TE heads don't get much chatter here, but the M-05 and MTFs sure did and it's basically the same model. Shafted on Humps, MOI matched to my target, these were set up with nice mid-size Tacki-mac grips (and Pro-Soft inserts!). Much like my 560s from last year, I really enjoy them for soft shots around the green. The feel is good, and the head design just looks right to me for that type of shot. On full swings, I get nice trajectory but not as high as my old 752s (comparable lofts on the heads), but they feel great. On off-center hits, I guess the TEs are okay, but they pale compared to the 560s -- especially on balls I hit thin which happens more often than I care to admit. In all, the TEs are great irons which not surprisingly aren't that different than my old M-06s!

Next up was the Dynacraft CNC Forged. These were talked up plenty here on FGI and deservedly so. Mine are on Apollo Phantom shafts with ProSoft insert and Tour Velvet grips. I have only hit them at the range, but they are smooth, high launching, and although the head looks compact to me, they seem very forgiving. I want to have them on the course soon to see how they are around the green. The top line is a little thicker than I'd hoped but I've adjusted because . . .

The Maltby Tricept TU has been my biggest surprise of the season. There have been favorable reviews of this club, and I can certainly understand. It has all the markings of a super-GI club with a deep undercut cavity, wide sole, medium-thick topline, and stronger lofts. Mine are shafted on FST115 reg, ProSofts, Tacki-Mac grips, and are MOI matched to my specs. These are really terrific clubs -- they are as forgiving as any iron I've played, and they launch high given the strong lofts. I hit them a touch farther than I'm used to based on the numbers on the sole, so that's been an adjustment, and I have to carry an extra GW at 50* for full swings because there's too big of a gap between the PW and my 52* wedge. But those are minor issues fixable at the bending machine. They work really well for chipping although I haven't had many opportunities for other short shots with them. That will come. These are great heads and great clubs. Much as I'd like to give those Dynacrafts a run, I want to keep these TUs in the bag.

I may still put together a 979SS demo given the great feedback on that head. On the other hand, I am not sure what the 979SS could do to impress me more than these TU heads!
