I have an 18-year-old son who is a very good tennis player but never really got into golf. He's maybe played 10 or 12 rounds in the past 6 years, at most. I don't think he played last year at all.

Anyway, he just came back home after completing his first year at college, and said he wanted to play some golf. I took him to a local municipal course for 9 holes. The first three were pretty rough.

Fourth hole is a par 3 over water, about 130 yards. I handed him a nine iron. His shot was perfect all the way. Missed going in by about 3 inches, and settled about 18 inches behind the cup. He drained the short putt for his first birdie ever.

Excellent and happy you were there as a witness.

Hopefully golf will become a life long sport for him and you will have many rounds together!
