It seems all the newer drivers are advertising high launch/low spin. I'm wondering, being a slower swinger (90-92),should I be looking for a high spin driver? My distance has fallen off as i've tried moving the ball forward, hitting up at the ball, etc. I'm now going to go back to an older approach, but wondering about the driver head itself. Should slower swingers eschew the low spin heads and which heads would be considered "high spin" Oem and component thanks

Without knowing your angle of attack etc., I'd guess a higher spin driver would work better for you on the basis of getting more carry distance with it. It won't roll out so much but I find if I don't get enough air on my driver, it still won't roll out all that far anyway. My swing tends to impart too much spin on the ball so I need to use low spin heads. I played at the weekend in cold, damp conditions and hit some super drives but they just didn't get either carry (because of the mid trajectory I tend to hit) or roll in the damp conditions so what felt like super drives wwere getting matched or outdriven by guys who were carrying more than me. I'd actually prefer to use something more high spin where I could get more carry but this doesn't work for me - I feel like I've murdered the drive only to see it spin like a mo fo and go nowhere. A higher lofted (say 12 degree) low spin head might be a compromise. That's my 2 cents, others with more knowledge than me might disagree and have other views.

aahhh...the "spin doctors" are at work here. all their talk about spin is "spin". they want you to buy the "latest and greatest". all the "secrets" in golf have already been revealed. it's up to us to educate ourselves to them. "step awaaaayyyy from the hype...step awaaaaaayyyy..."

elvis, I have the same s/s and the driver is my favorite club. I don't ho the driver much at all. I had a lot of luck with a deeper face lower spin head in a higher loft, with a non-soft tip. I felt that combo gave me a lot of distance for my speed. It was a Dynacraft Avatar 460 12º which measured more like 14º, and a Penley Stealth 70 R flex with no tipping, at 44". It was a good fit for my swing in many ways. I don't know my A of A but I think it is not negative. Maybe level, maybe slightly up. Then I replaced it with my current driver, which is a higher spin variety, and the shaft is maybe a little less stout. But I went to 45" which required a less stout shaft to suit me. This is a Nike SQ Dymo Str8-Fit 11.5º, and a discontinued UST for Maltby shaft. I hit it less high but get better distance, and I'm pretty sure I get more spin. It was known on forums as a higher spin head. It's not a huge improvement over the Avatar combo, and maybe the gains are as much from the extra inch as anything. My earlier experiments with higher spin drivers resulted in shorter hits, until I went down a bit in loft. It's a fine line for me. I'm right about at optimum loft for my swing now. In general, you can recognize a lower spin driver as having a deeper (taller) face, and/or being shorter from front to rear. The SoooLong 450 which was discussed in the thread about the college lady is a great example. I've hit that one and a few like that, and sometimes they were a lot shorter for my speed. The Avatar was, I think, on the lower edge of my spin needs. The Nike is probably near the upper end. I should get them both on a monitor, it would be great to put some data to my observations. A higher spin head will often be a shallower face, and more stretched from front to rear. I had a Wilson Spine that spun like crazy. It was low and stretched. It was a straight shooter, but also lost distance. The shaft plays a role in allowing or resisting the head's COG's attempt to move in line with the shaft, of course. But the head itself seems to be very important. Today's drivers are mostly all stretched to the max, but you can use face height as a basic starting point to guess about spin. It's just a rule of thumb, not a certainty. Obviously they can do a lot with material placement to change the COG. Also, if they tout high launch, it's probably higher spin. Even though they will be saying high launch and low spin, lol. Hope this helps or at least contributes.

"step awaaaayyyy from the hype...step awaaaaaayyyy..." if I get a high launch low spin head and paint it white, would it go 17 yards longer? Not unless you have a Speed Slot.

In fact I'd say quite the opposite, but even that statement would not hold true either!! It comes down to how the head was manufactured to perform, not the size or shape. ex.-- Find a Titleist 983K and a Titleist 983E to compare looks and performances.
