Story here. From the article, "A spokesman for Rep. Amash referred to Amash’s Facebook page, where he wrote that he did not believe Nicklaus was in the company of other recipients such as George Washington or the Wright Brothers. " Few are. If that is the standard that must be met then no one should receive it. Jack Nicklaus has represented the game, and in turn his country, like few others.

"I think the original purpose of the Congressional Gold Medal is better than Congress's modern practice," Amash wrote. "Jack Nicklaus had a legendary golfing career. But I think it's better to reserve the medal for those whose heroism and self-sacrifice was made to save the lives of others."

The above from Your link.

I concur...

And I think Jack would also IMO!

From the Wikipedia page on the Congressional Gold Medal, "Since the American Revolution, Congress has commissioned gold medals as its highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions. Each medal honors a particular individual, institution, or event. Although the first recipients included citizens who participated in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, Congress broadened the scope of the medal to include actors, authors, entertainers, musicians, pioneers in aeronautics and space, explorers, lifesavers, notables in science and medicine, athletes, humanitarians, public servants, and foreign recipients.[1] The medal was first awarded in 1776 by the Second Continental Congress to then-General George Washington and John Paul Jones during the American Revolutionary War.[2]

It doesn't matter what Amash thinks, it matters what Congress defined as qualifying for the award. Based on the above I think he qualifies.

If congress had to vote for a certificate of merit for Mother Theresa - there would be four opposed.

No argument there.

She already has one fwiw.
If Byron Nelson and Arnie have them I can't see why Jack should be denied.

First off I think that Congress has better things to do that give people meaningless awards.

I pretty much grew up after the Nicklaus era, but I have to say that he is not one of my favorite American golfers. Not because he isn't a great golfer, but because he just comes across to me as kind of a conceited jerk. Of course most people who are great at something are conceited jerks, but I have read awesome anecdotes about Palmer being a great guy and have never read one about Nicklaus being a decent human being. Like I said though, I really don't know a great deal about him, this is just the impression I have.

edit: I will partially retract my statement because I had forgetten about this: http://www.golfdigest.com/magazine/2008-03/myshot_martin, although I still think it shows him as being halfway decent at best.

That's progress. They didn't vote along party lines.

Why should altheletes receive medals from their country? ....ditto for entertainers.... it is really dumb. ..maybe Jack could be knighted by the british thrown since the game of golf was invented there.

Thanks for the article glebert. I know you posted it in reference to Jack but I read the whole article from Casey and found it enlightening. I have always admired Casey for his perseverance despite his disability. Maybe HE deserves a medal for what he's accomplished in the face of adversity.
