Hello all, here's the scoop, I am just leaving a demo day and while I was trying to compare my ebay purchased wishon 870's the shaft snapped just below the grip. Anyone know how that could happen? Secondly, do I have to worry that this may happen to the rest of my set? Fyi there are shafted with wishon series 5 steel shafts.

I would not worry about it odds are it was just a fluke failure. I have had shafts fail on a few occasions so it is not outside the realm of possibility that it "just happened". All the Wishon products I have purchased and built have always been rock solid quality wise including their series 5 shafts.

I hope so. For some reason i'm snake bitten this year. First my acer xds cabriolets heads come off from poor epoxy. Then I buy these 870's and break the 6 iron-lol. Maybe it's a sign to get them reshafted (which I had thoughts of doing)

Yikes...definitely a fluke. Never heard of a steel shaft snapping there.

Did you look inside the shaft at the brake? I've seen steel shafts brake below the grip when weakend by rust. Do you have any inserts in them? Take a look inside. It could be just a one off thing, or they may have gotten wet from humidity or even rain. ??

After further inspection, there is a bit of rusting i think. It looks like maybe some water got in because there is a straight brown line all the way down the shaft and then brownish streaks all over the rest of the shaft. When I got these clubs, they were re-gripped and backweights were taken out before they were shipped to me so I guess maybe some water got in somehow. Anyways looks like I will just re-shaft. Now to search for some shafts...At the demo day the Mizuno shaft optimizer spit out a 6 iron swing speed of 84mph and recommended dynamic gold SL, project X 5.0 and Kbs tours. I'm pretty sure it said stiff flex for the KBS and DGSL so I was a bit curious why the project x was 5.0 and not 5.5. Anyways, I hit the 5.5 just fine but my favorite shaft of the day was the stock nippon 950 in both the nike vrs forged and TM R11 irons that I tried. The nippon did launch high for me but it had the best feel. I guess its time to look in the swap shop for some shafts!

How long have you owned the clubs ?? Seems to me rust would have to be present for quite sometime to cause a failure. Is there a possibility there was a flaw in the construction of the shaft ?? Just curious...

Years ago I had a Callaway X-14 8i fail in a similar manner, and the clubs were only a couple of years old. I don't think rust would cause a failure in such a short time.

As a side note, I called Callaway and was given a referral number and sent it back to Callaway. Within a week, I received a brand new 8i...

I now wonder if the shafts had been spined, using a tubetype spinefinder.(?)

Thats cool. I got them off ebay a month or so ago and just hit them at the range a few times. I'm just gonna suck it up and reshaft. As for causation, flaw in shaft or rust, I have no idea-just a sign to get a different shaft I think.

broke a driver VS Proto under the grip one day. Graphite, but still weird.

Fwiw, a steel or graphite shaft can be easily damaged/weakened, and subsequently snap, below the grip if it has been clamped in too tight. Unfortunately, I know this from personal experience.

that's a heavy stress point especially when big divots are produced. don't get too hung up on the flex, go for feel.
