To be surprised is one thing, to prejudge the mom and her motives based merely on a birthday party is another.

Wasn't trying to guess the mom's motive, as I have no idea. I suppose I am judging to the extent that I think she's doing her son a disservice, but I certainly wouldn't argue that she doesn't have that right.

As for who's making the choices, however, my opinion is that kids are largely a product of their environment. If the mother gave the boy baby dolls and fairy princess wands instead of fire trucks and superheroes, why would he want anything different? Remember, we're talking about a boy who just turned 5. He's not even in kindergarten yet and may not have been exposed to other things.

Hopefully, the mom does not have an agenda and once he gets into play dates, pre-school, kindergarten etc he will be allowed to find his own way.

As long as he doesn't become a NHL official and call the game the way the Wings - Preds game #1 was officiated.

They should just take the internet and all gaming tools away from that kid and say "go play outside". This is from a computer guy. When I was a kid, if Superhost godzilla movies weren't on, I was outside. I may come back in to watch "The Greatest American Hero", but that was it. No cable, no internet, no problems. Also, I am a father to two children and one is now a teenager. I am by no means an expert on this subject, but I at least feel qualified to put my two cents in. These kids are open books at 5 years old. They learn by behavior and that is a fact. The mom should show him how to throw a baseball...hell my mom did.

Super Edit: I throw like a girl.

LOL

My son prefers my daughter's dolls and dollhouses to cars etc. I just like to see him play appropriately with something now and then.

I certainly agree with both of those statements!

I find it sort of amusing the things people worry about with perfectly healthy/normal kids. In a different life I'd be right there in the discussion....but I'm living this life.

Have a child like mine who's 5, can't speak and isn't potty trained and worry about these things.

Or better yet, have a child who's profoundly disabled and can't even express a preference for one toy over another and you'll see how silly all of these other concerns really are.

My well-earned 2 cents.

Chris

Pink is a color that will trigger violent behavior.
Tell your son to stay away from this little guy.

Im agreeing with this. Get the kids out from in front of the TV, video games, etc and go freakin play outside. Play in the dirt, climb a tree, swing on the swing set, use your imagination. Kids learn a lot of their behavior from TV and I think the less they are exposed to it the better.

I'm with Coach and Tap-In on this one.

And I disagree with GIMC that if the kid is this way, his mother must've led him to it. Many 5-year-old kids have and express preferences, some of which are contrary to what the parents desire.

Maybe the kid is gay, and maybe he isn't. Who cares? When are people going to stop being irrational about boy's stuff, girl's stuff, straights and gays, and all that.

A parent should focus primarily on making sure that his/her child is cared for, loved, and happy. All other concerns are secondary.

I can understand a little boy playing house with a little girl and having dolls but have NEVER seen a boy get dolls for a birthday present and being several dolls (Barbie) WITH a cake frosted in pink with a fairy princess. Thats just wierd. I know hes just turning 5 and still young but honestly if we took a poll out of 1000 people how many people would you think would say out of that 1000 ive seen that before a 5 year old getting "serveral dolls and a pink with a fairy princess cake at the age of 5? Its not normal I dont care who you are. Im not saying thats wrong buts it not normal.
Im guessing theres more to the story and something may be going on with the boy. (Shrug)

I guess Im use to my son playing with cars, trucks, play guns army stuff ect and wanting a transformers, Cars or Hot Wheels cake.

All im saying is if I seen it would of thought the same thats odd or wierd but if thats what "he" the son likes so be it. As a father im not sure I would like it or want it that way but would still love my son!
