... and when I walked in with my boy I saw that several of the gifts were dolls (Barbie, etc.), the cake was frosted in pink with a fairy princess on top, and several other types of birthday decorations were female oriented. This wouldn't generally be worth noting, except that the guest of honor, who just turned 5, is a boy. What the heck is his mother trying to do to him (note: apparently the father is out of the picture)?

She might not be doing anything other than what her son wants.

and where do you think little kids (who don't care either way) get those ideas that there is something "wrong" with boys and pink?

She might not be doing anything other than what her son wants.

If that's what he wants, then that's what he was taught to want.

I can see that I appear close-minded, but I don't think that the mother is doing her boy any favors.

yes just as adults teach kids that blue is for boys and GI joe dolls are ok but barbies are not.

put babies in a room and never give them any direction as to "acceptable" gender toys and they really wouldnt give a crap which they played with.

so why does it matter beyond just what makes us adults comfortable?

not picking a fight just pointing out the sillyness of the whole thing, in my mind

I agree with you. My boys surely like Superman and dinosaurs because of me.

Let me ask you this: What if the mother put the boy in a dress with tights? Still just silliness?

Sorry but most of this is incorrect. There are many studies of children and their play habits and toy choices. The studies show that the children overwhelmingly choose in favor of what we would deem traditional "boy" choices for the boy's and the girls chose "girly" stuff. They also tried to force what would be the "opposite" type of toy onto said children and they normally were not successful at ingraining any kind "open" decision. Now of course there were those children that didn't fit into this category, but they were few and far between.

I don't know what to say about this birthday boy. Is it the mom? Or does he just like dolls?

Hopefully from their parents who don't want to see their kids getting ridiculed and picked on during their formative years.

Quinten is right, there are numerous studies that back me up on this.

Additionally, I saw it first hand. My sister was one of those "let them find their own way" parents and her two boys grew up getting picked on in school. One of them is in his mid 20's now and it has carried over to his adult life. He has had numerous jobs because his co-workers tease the crap out of him because he comes off as "odd'.

Raise your kids the way you want. You want to buck accepted social morays regardless of the consequences? Go for it. For me, I didn't want to set mine up for ridicule and failure in the name of social experiment. We must have done something right as all three are well adjusted, productive and socially accepted adults.

To each his own.
