I'm a 14-15 hcp so birdies aren't necessarily a common occurrence for me. Every couple rounds I might see one but don't see a ton. I've had 2 in a round a few times, but again....not common. So Saturday I'm playing a local course called the Meadows of Sixmile creek. Not super long, about 6100 yds, but it runs through a marsh so there's trouble everywhere. If you can avoid trouble and get to the bent-grass greens, they putt really nicely. I started off my birdie barrage with a chip-in on #4 which is a par 3. Hit the correct club but pulled it and was pin high about 10 yds off the left side of the green which slopes fairly steep from back to front. Hit a nice chip that had quite a break to it so it was more luck than anything when it went in but I'll take it. Next birdie came on the par 4 #13. Hit a nice gap wedge to a middle pin to about 15 ft and made a mild breaker for my second of the day. Happy as could be with 2! The next hole is a short par 3 and I hit on to the front edge but had a little bit of backspin with the Penta and it rolled off onto the fringe. Fairly straight putt straight uphill about 15 ft. again and made it dead center for birdie number 3 on the day...yeehaaa! Next hole is a par 4 and I hit just off the left fringe again. Pretty much identical situation as the first birdie...it's rolling...rolling...heading straight for the cup and....doh! Hit the right side of the cup and spun 180* to stop about 2 ft. away. Next hole, #16, was a par 5...layed up and hit my approach dead at the pin. It hit about 2 ft past the flag, took a couple small hops and stopped. Had a straight 5 footer directly down hill. My confidence soaring and thinking "I can make this easy!". Lol, got too aggressive and blasted it about 1/2" to the right of the hole about 5 ft past and missed the comeback for a 3-putt bogey. Humbling game at times! The next hole, #17, a par 4 I hit the green in regulation but had a tricky sideslope 25 footer so I wasn't even thinking about making it...just hoping to get it close. Good speed, nice line and bam! it dives in on the low side of the hole for birdie #4! Of course I got a lot of ribbing from my playing partner during the round of beers afterward. Everything from "Lucky bastard", "You must have eaten your Wheaties this morning!" and my favorite...."You gotta be juicing!". Heh heh...it was certainly a round for me to remember! 4 birdies and pretty good chances at 2 more...Hopefully this is just the start of a good season!
