Hi Everyone,... if anyone ever reads this. Seems like this thread is dead... so trying to revive it.

I am a newbie... so to speak. I actually picked up golf about 10 years back and played quite frequently with friends. I enjoyed the sport as a sport, but mostly for its beauty of allowing me to spend a day outdoors and just enjoy the game and nature.

However, after about a year I ran into a big funk. I wasn't the greatest golfer to begin with. I'd be lucky to get +2, +3 on a hole. But for whatever reason one day I just wasn't even able to get the ball airborne. I tried going to ranges, time after time after time to get whatever swagger/swing I had back. But it was just in vain.

I eventually gave up all together. My passion for the sport turned from enjoyment to frustration.

With my friends constantly telling me to play again, the urge to "enjoy" the sport, and my need to pick up the game for 'business purposes', I am getting back into golf.

That being the case, I wanted to reach out to everyone and ask how I should do this.

I never took lessons in the past, just picked up pointers here and there. I know I didn't have the proper form, so I'm thinking I should take lessons to start. Kind of like a clean slate? Another approach was to read some books?

Regardless, if I took lessons. Is a group one OK? or just go with a few privates, etc.?

Sorry for the long story... I just want to start off on the right track. I loved the sport and I want to get back into it.

Thanks!

Andy

start with the correct grip and that will benefit you through out the process of "learning" the game

group lessons are fine as long as the group is not too large, you want to be able to have some individual time with the instructor
if needed

learn the game backwards, ie learn chipping and putting, then short irons, then mid irons, then long irons/hybrids then fairway woods and then driver

you learn how to strike the ball on the practice tee, you learn how to "golf your ball" and score on the course

Hi Coachsb,

Thanks for the tidbits.

I'll start off the group lessons. Haven't dug around too much. But any advice on really good directories that list out golf schools/pro's? I am in Southern California. I know of a bunch of courses, but is there a "yelp" of sorts for these?

Hi there.
I'm glad someone revived this topic.
Unfortunately there is no overnight quick fix.
Golf is all about small gradual improvements.
The best tip I can give you is to be comfortable
and to relax your muscles.
Any tension in your body works against you.
Don't try to generate power by swinging with your arms and wrists.
Don't try to hit too hard! This is one of the most common problems facing
beginners. Your club head needs to accelerate al the way down and through the
ball so don't waste all your power the moment you start your down swing,

Hope this helps a little.
