My safety tube is about a 16" section of steel tube closet rod left over from a project. I got the tubing at Home Depot.

linky

I follow Arnie's instructions, although I've never had much success blowing off grips that were put on with traditional grip tape. I've gotten some off by working grip tape solvent down the mouth end with a small rod, but it takes a while.

The problem is with the "protector tube" you are using!

Check out these videos on YouTube

If you are trying to remove a grip that was installed using the "conventional" method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOGER9xVnQg

If you are trying to remove a grip that was installed using air: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qd3Qzz3m4cg

I just started doing this a few weeks ago, and it is really easy. The only two important things to remember: if you are removing a grip not installed by air you do NEED that protective cilinder around the grip - otherwise it will blow up. And, two, if you use a vise, make sure you have a shaft protector, otherwise you will damage the shaft. I use this one: http://www.valuegolf.com/rubber-shaft-clamp/

One thing is certain, If you blow up 1 grip you'll always use the tube. Just go to a plumbing supplier, they always have off cuts of 2" poly tube

"2" poly tube "
TOO BIG!!!
If a grip that you are blowing off expands to the inside of a 2" tube the grip will most likely burst!

Just cut the grip off. If you want that grip on you are removing, why remove it?

The florescent lamp protector's purpose is to contain the heat from the lamp so that in cold weather the light output does not decrease.
These tubes are rather thin walled and not really good for blowing off grips.
Contact me at Arniesclubs@aol.com for a lexan protector tube.

You can make a safety tube or buy one. Home Depot has Florescent light protectors, they slip over the light to keep you from breaking the light if you tapped it with something. Just cut it to the length of the grip, costs about $3.

Take a paper towel cardboard cylinder and wrap it diagonally with strapping tape.

Maybe to cut the shaft down and then replace the grip? or because you want to use that grip in a different club...?

Want to increase your odds of saving older grips and reduce the possibility of ruining a grip removing it with air when installed with double sided grip tape.

I use a thin wall pvc for a protector tube, but the secret to saving grips even when they are old and might split is to use a piece of heavy vinyl to wrap around the grip so when you slide on the protector tube you have filled the space of the taper. This means you need to cut the vinyl with an angle so it fills the taper of the grip. Wrap it around the grip, slide on the protector tube and it will hold the vinyl in place if you have cut your piece to the correct size.

I use heavy vinyl because it doesn't absorb the mineral spirits you need to insert in the shaft and blow under the grip to free it from the double sided tape.

I have a couple of different pieces which I will use on some putter grips. The type of vinyl you want is heavy such as a scrap from someone doing boat seats, etc. That is where I got my scraps - free.

I know you know all Arnie, but here you are wrong. I have been using this florescent light protector for over ten years and probably a thousand grips blown off. Never a problem. Just because you didn't think of it doesn't mean it is not viable.

...Shaft protector tube from a golf bag, think they are like $1.49 anywhere if you don't already have one laying around...

Cut to length - works like a charm...

I use an attachment from an old upright vacuum cleaner my wife found at the bottom of a closet.
