I don't bother putting them in a vise, I just hold them upright with the head on a piece of carpet and push the grip down on while blowing air in the vent hole. I haven't had much luck with grips that have been put on with grip tape so I don't even try those and I don't usually use a protector tube.

Ok, this is my method and don't let anyone tell you it won't work. Crank your compressor down to 65 psi, you can always take it up if necessary. Put your shaft in your holder, hopefully head still on. If not plug it. Slide a 2" by 10 " piece of poly pipe over the grip, this will save you in event of explosion. Put your air nozzle in the hole in the butt of the shaft. Apply air slowly while twisting grip near the butt, some times they stick at the other end so try twisting there to. If it's going to come of it will by now or if you up the air pressure it will by now CAUTION if at any time you suddenly feel it expand drop every thing and turn away. 0nly do this stuff if you really want that grip otherwise cut it.
I stubbled onto the installing procedure by accident. After cleaning off the left overs. Hold the grip against the club, mark the shaft with non permanent felt tip ensuring you're leaving that bit on the butt. The grip will stretch a little when installed so don't panic. Apply masking tape I do mine length ways it's easier and makes no difference,a couple of layers is enough.
Now make sure you have the club head in the right place so that once the grip is on it will only need a slight adjustment. Get yourself some white spirits. Using a big artist brush lather the tape and pour a bit into the grip so that inside is fully coated (you can't use too much). So every thing is well coated slip the end of the grip over the shaft and slide it on by hand sometimes you need to twist it back and forth as you push it, usually because the white spirits on the shaft has soaked in. Don't panic just blow it of and repeat. Here is why I think it works. There is glue already in the grip ,the white spirits is it's solvent, it is also the solvent for the masking tape glue. So it be comes a contact adhesive job. You will have under 5 minutes to position the grip. 10 minutes and it can be played.
The only time I have had difficulty is too much tape or wrong size grip. If you are set on blowing the grip on, slide it on a couple of inches, slide the tubing over it(still ensuring you have lathered the white spirits on as lube. Put nozzle in, work between front and back of grip until it's on. Most of the time it will slip on with the air no problems, but if there IS too much tape or the grip is TOO small the air may quickly dry the white spirits and the grip can go bang quickly. In this case maybe you need glue. Don't know ,I have never owned glue and done hundreds with out a complaint, and customers love that they can use it straight away. Hope this helps

Listen to Potbunker's link to Arnie's instructions.

An explanation with personal examples of difficulties is not a good guide.

Well, I told you the easiest no mess way of doing it in a Dick and Jane explanation but hey do what you want . At least use the safety tube, you would be a complete fool not to, your working with high pressures here.

Yeah, I guess Arnie's instructions aren't very specific on this. I have used a plastic golf club separator tube cut to the length of a grip. This is the type of tube that goes in the golf bag that you slip each club into. Cheap and easy to find.

Arnie advocates a clear lexan tube so you can see what's going on. Any tube that fits closely around the grip will do. There have been multiple threads on this subject over the years. If you do a search, all of your questions will be answered.

You can make a safety tube or buy one. Home Depot has Florescent light protectors, they slip over the light to keep you from breaking the light if you tapped it with something. Just cut it to the length of the grip, costs about $3.

Take a paper towel cardboard cylinder and wrap it diagonally with strapping tape.

FWIW I find I don't need the safety tube unless I'm doing one of the following:

1. Removing a grip that was installed with grip tape & solvent. Grips vary in how much pressure you need and if you don't get enough solvent underneath one will blow up every so often.

2. Removing a Lamkin 3GEN grip that's been blown on. I don't know what it is about these, but I've seen < 40 psi blow these up like a puffer fish if you don't loosen the mouth of the grip 1st. Haven't seen one explode, but they will be stretched to uselessness lol.
