I understand that Tiger Woods has been a dominant force in the game of golf for many years. I agree he has been a master of the game for many years.

What I don't understand or agree with is the way the media has to talk about Tiger all the time. There are many other exciting players out on the tour but all we hear about is Tiger, Tiger, Tiger...

IMO it gets very old and tiresome to listen to. I realize there have been many pro / anti Tiger threads and I am not looking for a discussion on his merits. I enjoyed watching golf when Tiger wasn't in the hunt because the media focused on all of the field that was in contention not just Tiger.

This is mostly a rant about the media and their short sighted view on how the game should be covered. Really, do they think that the whole audience 'LOVES' Tiger that much that they can't talk about any of the other players.

End rant.

Well the ratings show yes.... the audience does LOVE Tiger. So until Tiger stops bringing in the ratings, they will show him. When attendance at PGA events doesn't significantly increase when Tiger is in the field, it might change.

Even my dead grandmother loved Tiger. Hated golf, but watched strictly to see Tiger.

You want to watch golf without Tiger. Golf Channel Euro PGA tour coverage and LPGA coverage and Champions tour coverage. Lots of other options for you.

I know that Tiger brings the fans out and the T.V. ratings are up when he is in the field. My point was that the media can't balance out their coverage when Tiger is even remotely close to winning. Other players can shoot career low rounds but if Tiger has a mediocre round and makes an eagle then the media is all Tiger and every one else is ignored.

I am just sayin' I would like to see some balance. There are other great talents on the course that deserve the recognition.

Well who do want to see covered? Seriously, name some names. Yes, there are some exciting other players but most show up one week then gone. Bubba Watson can be exciting to watch to a degree. Weir maybe? Lots of these players are kind of dull really in my view. I like Els and he's in it. They gave him reasonable coverage. Daly gets coverage when he's in an event but he's over in Europe this week I think. I like John Daly too. He's gots his share of issues but no where near the amount of haters Tiger has.

+1 I really haven't got a problem with him. In fact I look forward to him playing consistently well but I have enjoyed the broad coverage of other players rather than shots of him walking, conversations about his club covers and the endless worn out phrases like"Tigers on the prowl", someone about to putt and we cut to Tiger staring at his ball, stuff like that. There are golfers out there I didn't know existed until Tiger stepped on his d*ck.

I watched the Bayhill tournament yesterday in which TW was in the final group and playing well. I also saw the coverage of many other players in line with television policy that shows players in contention, or falling out of. The talking heads did spend a great deal of time discussing TW because he was on the coverage a good bit. I also heard them spend time on Bubba, Charlie Wi, and anyone else who was hovering around the first page of the leaderboard.

The ratings don't necessarily show the audience LOVES Tiger. Many watch to see him fail. There has always been the argument that the bumped up ratings are from people who have no interest in golf. YOU may not care about that but I bet Callaway, Taylor made, Titleist etc. think about that when advertising. I think the media has been pretty fair so far in this tourney incidentally.

For those of you who don't want to see Tiger at any time, DVR the golf and fast forward when he comes on. Then you can watch what you want.

OP would probably not want to watch the LPGA because of the incessant talk about Yani Tseng.

lets face it this was the first time in around 3 years he went into the weekend with a lead. That is BIG news for golf in general. And when TW is in contention whether you like him or not people watch golf and the ratings go up. Its a win win for golf and the networks.

While there are certainly people that want to see him fail, and may tune it to see it, they are far outnumbered. It is the golf community that has shunned him and changed their general opinion of him far more than any casual fan that bumps the ratings significantly. It is the golf community far more interested in his soap opera. When was the last time we saw Tiger on TMZ? The public may not worship him the way they once did, but they are also pretty accepting of celebrities and their faults.

You just don't get that bump in in ratings from people looking for the train wreck because it really isn't a train wreck anymore. Maybe the first year or so of scandal, but it has pretty much run its course. I think the general public are turning on to see him win again. It's becoming the classic American come back story. Guy who had everything, screwed up, cheated on his model wife, got caught, got exposed, lost "everything" (yes its relative), hits rock bottom, turns it around starts enjoying the game again and wins again. That's what people are looking for. Golf was a lot more relevant to the non-golf players when Tiger was winning. That's the market companies are going after.

Do I watch golf this afternoon to see Tiger blow up or win?

Not really even a choice. Kentucky is playing Baylor for a spot in the Final Four. I suspect if Tiger wins it will be to smallest audience ever in his career.
