I've played the game for many decades, now, and my patterns in this regard are well established.

I'm much braver hitting at a flagstick than I am hitting at a fairway on the tee of a tight driving hole.
I'll risk shortsiding myself going right at a flagstick, because I lob better than I chip or lag putt anyway. If I hit the beach, I definitely want to be on the short side because long bunker shots are impossible for me. I very rarely leave the ball in the sand, but I don't get it to the hole, either.

I'll also try to carry water with a fairway wood rather than laying up if my chances look 50% or better. I won't change my twenty year old fairway metalwoods because I'm so comfortable with them.

Put me on the tee of a tight driving hole, however, and there's no way that driver is coming out of my bag. I absolutely hate to put myself in jail off the tee. I need to see wide open spaces to let the big dog eat. In any typical group, I'm the guy who hits driver the fewest times unless there's some guy who doesn't hit driver at all.

I often won't even hit those fairway woods that I like so much. I'll hit an ugly line drive with my driving iron because even though it doesn't go far, I know that I'll hit it straight and leave myself a shot from short grass.

I have no issue hitting a full swing flop shot from most lies just off the green. Had more than one partner tell me that shot took "rocket balz"

I'm brave on carries over water.

I'm brave on long lag putts.

I'm brave on chip shots over sand traps.

I'm generally chicken on tight driving holes and I tend to be chicken on short putts (working on this).

I tend to be conservative (I'm not a chicken! ) on tight driving holes too.

I will fire at flags though if I have no more than an 8i in my hand. I probably shouldn't as my short game's just ok, but I still do.

I have no concept of this "lag putt" people speak of. This could explain all the 3-putts, but it's just not in my nature.

I rarely go for it on par 5's even if I can get there. I struggled with duck hooking longer clubs for awhile and it's just became habit to lay up and I really enjoy stuffing a wedge close.

I will try to hit a drive or short iron/wedge over almost any tree in my way. I hit the ball pretty high and I get more into seeing if I can get over that tree than I am in posting a score on that hole. It must be some sort of OCD thingie.

A tight driving hole doesn't faze me as much as it used to....

and I like to fire at the flag.

What ties up my hands however, is a very tight lie without a lot of green to work with when I'm chipping. I really need to get a low bounce wedge.

I'm brave pretty much everywhere. Thing is, I should be afraid a lot more often
