While watching "School of Golf" the other day I was surprised to hear Martin Hall say that he attended a workshop given by Tiger-where Tiger said he hit down on the ball with his driver! Whether he was recommending this for all golfers was not clear. I've always tried to hit slightly upwards. This is something for me to try at the range. I think it may give me propositive rotational negative spin relief which could result in fantastic distance.

Extracted from 'TrackMan News' quote:
Question: Is it so that all the better players have a positive attack angle with their driver? Answer: No, this is not the case for many of the PGA TOUR players. Players like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Charles Howell III are all players who often swing with significant, negative attack angles. However, common for this group of players is their very high club and ball speeds, so they fly the ball pretty far despite their negative attack angle – they do not really have a distance problem! However, if they increased their attack angle they could hit the ball 30-40 yards further. But apparently they have deliberately chosen not to do this. The AVERAGE Attack Angle on the Men's PGA Tour is actually slightly negative, which suggests that many are not primarily concerned with maximising distance (because if that were the case, they would all favour an upward AoA ...). Cultivating a more upward AoA won't necessarily increase distance. Say your spin rate is on the cusp of being too high for the launch angle you currently achieve with your current AoA and you make a set-up and swing change to make your AoA significantly more upwards (or significantly less downwards). Whilst the spin rate won't change (unless you do something to change the spin loft), that could possibly result in the spin rate now being too high for the new, higher launch angle ... The quote above should probably read ".... if they increased their attack angle and if necessary reduced their driver lofts they could hit the ball 30-40 yards further ...."
