Anybody know what happens if you hit your driver on the downswing.I know the ideal place is in the start of the upswing. Slice?

you would be delofting the head. So if you are using a 10* driver, it would a act/perform like a 7or 8 * driver.
I had a buddy that used to deloft the heck out of a 7 wood and he could hit that thing as far as most people could hit their driver......

For me it ended in slices or strong fades most of the time.
I tried to play the ball dead center between my feet. Didnt work out so well.

Only if you take a divot with the driver and hit a rock. It only changes the relative angle of the club face. I play high lofted driver heads and deloft them at address with a little forward press plus have a negative angle of attack. That's what works for me and I probably hit a 12 or 14° head like a 9 or 10. I think the only downside with a driver is that if you hit the ball high on the face you might have too much spin which might reduce rollout but that can also vary depending in the head.

Typically if you hit it on the way down, you will lose distance and it could really go anywhere. It all depends on the angle of the face of the club and the path of your swing. A proper driver shot is always hit on the way up for that beautiful launching shot.

I guess I must not be "typical" and haven't been for the 50 years I have been playing golf. And at age 62 I had my best golfing year last year in many years with my negative AOA swing. I hit the ball farther and more accurately off of the tee with my 47.5" UL driver and had several close to scratch rounds. There is no such thing as "typical" or a "proper" way to hit a golf ball. It's what ever works for each golfer.

As I agree that there is no Proper way to hit a golf ball, there is such thing as Typical. Most Golfer that hit the ball on the way down with their driver will create a ton of top spin and see the ball go out and drop suddenly.
The original poster was looking for advice, not for what works for one out of maybe 1,000 golfers.

I saw a recent article that showed quite a few PGA pros actually have a negative AoA,including,I believe, Tiger Woods.

Yes many pros have a Negative AoA with most clubs, but the driver is different. One of the reasons the launch it so far is because they don't use a negative AoA swing. Tiger however, does, but only when he is trying to hit that stinger or a very low shot with his bigger clubs.
It is horrible advice to even try to convince a golfer to use this type of swing with their driver.
