I'm 100% against the fairway-wood-sized-hybrid head. Why? Because a hybrid is designed with the same loft, head weight, lie angle and shaft length as the corresponding # iron, and as such it is meant to be swing like an iron rather than a fairway wood. When you put a large FW wood sized head on the end of a shaft, when you look down at the club at address your mind is likely to think "fairway wood" and thus you are more likely to swing it like a FW wood rather than an iron. And in my experience, most of the people who I have met who can't hit a hybrid to save their life, tend to swing it more like a FW wood rather than an iron. Golf is a very mental game, and looking down at a fairway wood sized head and telling yourself "this is a hybrid, not a wood", and then telling yourself "swing it like an iron, not a fairway wood", isn't an easy thing to do. Your subconscious is likely to take over and cause you to swing it incorrectly, much like it already does for a lot of people with regular hybrid heads.

Didn't mean for that to sound like a rant, but reading it back it kinda does.

Rant or not, I think it's a good point. The size and shape of a head doesn't dictate your swing, but I think it certainly can influence it. An iron head with a lot of offset won't make you hook the ball, but it can get in your head at address and alter your swing and it's very hard to convince yourself otherwise. Of course every golfer is different and there are some that may make a better swing with an overly large hybrid head so there are no rules to what works for you.

I am one who has more confidence with a larger hybrid head. I have been gaming the Acer XDS widesole hybrids for a long time now. They are the one club in my bag never replaced....until maybe now.

Cannot tell you how many of the XDS wide sole hybrids I have built--a lot of them--never had anyone not like them or like the way they hit. Am going to have to get some of the new style in and see for myself but they do look interesting. Sorry to see the originals go tho, still have about 15 on my shelf--still build some almost on a weekly basis.

Definitely on my list to try when they become available. Especially the 18* machete model.

The 18* Machete is one of the new fairway woods, it's not a hybrid. And that's simply a clubhead that has the loft of a 5 wood but the weight of a 7 wood, and is meant to be built to a 7 wood length. It's basically the same thing they did with the Raw Power 3 wood which they designed to be built like a 5 wood but with the loft of a 3 wood. But the one thing they screwed up on, both with the Raw Power and this new Machete, is that they left the lie angle the same as a 5 wood rather than making it that of a 7 wood. And you can achieve the same thing by taking any 5 wood head on the market and adding 8-10g of weight to the hosel and making it to the length of a 7 wood. So I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but there's nothing too earth shattering there. Should still be a nice easy to hit club though with the shallow 32mm face height.

These are much larger than the XDS Wide Sole hybrids, they are basically fairway-wood-sized heads with hybrid lofts and head weights. Don't get me wrong, I'll still try them when they come out and I'll still carry them in my shop if people want them, but I'm personally not a fan of the design.

The volume on the XDS react appear to be around 30cc less than the XDS widesole. For instance the volumen on the XDS widesole 19* hybrid is 168cc. The 20* hybrid in the XDS React is 139cc. The breadth on the XDS widesole hybri is 70.5mm while the XDS react is 73mm. For headweight comparison, the 19* XDS widesole is 237g. The 20* XDS React is 242g.

Per Jeff Summitt:

We had a lot of success with the original XDS Wide Sole hybrid so we took the basic size and maintained it throughout the set, but vastly improved (IMHO) the looks and performance in many other areas.
