I have noticed that as I have gotten a little older I have lost a lot of muscle mass in my chest, and I didn't necessarily have that much to begin with. The problem I have (in addition to being old) is that I have issues with my shoulders, and most chest exercises like bench press, dumbell flys, pushups, etc tend to exacerbate my bursitis or thoracic outlet syndrome (more the bursitis). Any suggestions for chest exercises that are easier on the shoulders? thanks, greg

Decline bench is about the only exercise I can think of. Have you tried chest flies on a machine? There are ones were you basically try to touch your elbows together. You may want to try just doing lighter weight with more reps if at all possible.

This is going to sound really stupid, but if you just pretend like you're moving weights you can exercise any of your muscle groups at any resistance through whatever range of motion you want. The resistance is caused by the opposing muscles, which have to contract in order to make it seem like you're lifting a heavy weight. Stand in front of your bathroom mirror without a shirt on and pretend like you're on your back with a dumbbell in each arm. Move them wherever you want to build strength in whatever part of the pectoral you want to strengthen. If it hurts, decrease the resistance slightly by decreasing the imaginary weight of the dumbbell. If you can get past how stupid this sounds, I think you will find that it really works.

Use dumbbells. Turn hands inward, palms facing each when doing bench presses. Less strain on shoulder region. Avoid any wide grip barbell exercises. I don't advise trying to add a lot of bulk to the pecs, it will hinder your golf swing if you don't maintain adequate stretching.

You're welcome to come rake the leaves from my yard. It's a good size yard with LOTS of leaves....it's quite the workout, trust me

Push Ups....there are variations that better isolate the chest.

It's not just the exercise, when you get older, male would decrease their testosterone and muscle in general. It's actually a nature's way of defense against illness like stroke when you aged.

Look at kettlebells not just for upper chest but will give you a well rounded result 20 mins. a day 3x to 4x a week.
