I just got a 2001 Pontiac Firebird with 32,000 miles for a great price, Im pretty happy with the purchase. I've always wanted one of these cars, and to find one with such low miles, in great running shape and no accidents/bad history Im feeling pretty good.

This will be the first car I've owned that came with a leather interior. The interior in this car is in "ok" shape but it definately has some age and needs some TLC to get it prettied up. Can I get some advice on how to clean up the seats, dash, and interior of the car? What about auto detailing, how much does that normally run?

Winter coming? Got a garage? Except for the leather, do it yourself. Get a couple used dental tools, some cleaning products and have at it.

(I'd also suggest good music and brew to while away the hours...)

Sounds like fun!

http://www.autopia-carcare.com/

http://www.autogeek.net/

http://www.detailcity.com/

I use Lexol products on my leather interior, one for cleaning & one was a preservative that nourishs the leather and they are available from any of the sites I listed.

A 9-year-old car with only 32K miles? What needs fixing?

Change all of the fluids to synthetic. Use Gunk or Eagle engine flush added to the old oil before you change it. You add the flush and idle the engine for about 10 minutes, shut the car off and change the oil.

Pennzoil Platinum is a fine off the shelf oil synthetic oil. In fact, it is the best made by the major oil companies. You can purchase 5 qts in a single container at your local Wal-Mart for $20. Also, you can pour your old oil into the container after you change the oil and take it to Wal Mart and they will take your old oil and dispose of it properly for free. It even is stated on the bottle.

While you are there purchase a Fram XG, synthetic fiber extended guard filter for about $7. These are very good filters and are rated for 10K miles using synthetic oil.

I have used synthetics for over 30 years and the benefits are just too numerous to ignore.

Have the coolant checked and when you have the funds, have the system flushed and changed to non aqueous propylene glycol.

Evans makes a great coolant NPG+ that will never have to be replaced once it is installed. It is pricey at $30 a gallon, but it will not boil at 375* and you can change the radiator cap to a low pressure (4lbs) pressurized cap. The only reason that cars use a pressurized cooling system is to raise the boilng point of water to 276* with a 50/50 solution of Ethylene Glycol and water. The Evans coolant also actually seals against leaks. You need to drain the block by opening the block drains or remove the thermostat and lower hose and use a low pressure compressor (15lbs) and force the remaining water out of the engine, then seal everything up and add their "prep" fluid and drain it once more. If you can't do this yourself, you could have a mechanic do it.

Most people will just say screw it and just change the coolant, but NPG is vastly superior and you will never need to change it again.

Since the Non-aqueous Propylene Glycol contains no water and no water needing to be added to allow the NPG to be an effective heat exchanger, your cooling system will not scale or rust due to the fact there is no water in the system. This stuff is rated for 400,000 miles, but I have seen it used in Semi trucks for over 600K miles.

Also, is this a V8 or V6?

Lexol is the preferred leather care product, even in the horse world, for leather tack.

Lexol on the leather is the way to go. You may need a couple of treatments over a few days to get it up to par. As for the dash and such, something like armour all or son of a gun. Again, multiple treatments over time will continue to restorn the finish bring it up to standard. Also, keep it out of the sun as this will age the dash, etc.

Actually Lexol makes a product for vinyl/rubber. It is called Vinylex and it contains no silicone which can be drying and damaging to vinyl.

This car is the V6, i didnt want a V8, the gas is too expensive. The V6 engine is actually more fuel efficient than the Impala im getting rid of. My Impala is at 121k miles and is already starting to fall apart. I needed a car I can use for the next 3 or 4 years and no more than 7000. I got the Firebird for 5500 (he was asking 6500), and now dont have a car payment to worry about. Very nice

I dont have a garage, but I was looking for a car with low mileage, in good running shape. I ran the carfax and saw it was involved in a minor front end fender bender, but i checked the police report and made sure thats all it was. The front bumper and and hood were replaced, so no worries there. The guy said his mother owned the car but hardly drove it, and when she passed he inherited it. He already has 2 cars and didn't want it so he put it up for sale.

It needs new tires (got that scheduled for tomorrow) and some TLC but I think this was the best I could do with an extremely limited budget. I checked dealers for weeks but never found a car for that price with that mileage. The rear wheel drive thing won't be to bad, I used to live in Michigan and owned a couple RWD cars, you just gotta be careful and know how to adjust. It will be interesting for sure, but Kansas winters aren't too rough. More snow days for work is all

Thanks for the advice guys!
