My ashton xd-1's head is too large to really consistently hit clean off the deck. I need to find a small cc head three wood. I have recently went back to hitting my five because of my inability to really hit the three cleanly and have lost about 30 yards that I need to get back.

The Sonartec NP99 is very small and compact and is a great club. I couldn't tell you what cc it is but it's small and the smallest of the Sonartecs as far as I can tell. If you can get one in 17* it is even easier to hit and still goes as far as any 3 wood.

The TourSwing Tornado or Thunder, not sure what they call it, is something to consider. I think Rory mentioned on the another site they are $30 for the heads and will be on his website soon.

Adams BTY fairway woods were tiny rocket launchers. You can get them very cheap on Ebay too.

Just consider a 4 wood shafted to 3 wood length. I have one and it is every bit as long as any 3 wood I have ever had and much easier to hit off the deck.

I know it's a bit old school, but the TM V-steel is a smaller head with a medium depth face. I played one all of last year and it was a great performer. That said, I like the idea of the 4 wood shafted to 3 wood length. Maybe a 16.5* Wishon 949MC would be worth building over the winter? Hmmm...

Ashton X 1D has a deeper face, take a little more speed to get it off the turf but it rocks off the tee. What you're looking for is a shallower faced fairway wood, be careful not to get something too thin a face, cause sky marks are easy to come by. If you could find something in line of the Orlimar + model ( not the original ) which has a face depth in between and the tri metal weights to help the launch. Or, consider a slightly lighter more flexible shaft in the X 1D. quote:

Forgot to state the obvious, why not a plain Ashton X1 (non-d) model?

Al.....what loft...and do you have a cc # in mind? ......fyi....look at the sole curvature....and also.....the lower 3w lofts require a little higher SS to hit them effectively in my opinion. .....so.....loft is yr friend...and yes....a 16* head at 43* maybe a winner....

I love the Wishon 949MC although I'm not sure I would say it's small. The TM R7 TP is really nice and looks smaller at address than the 949MC to my eye.
