I'm going to the first round with my son. I'd appreciate suggestions as to how to best watch the Open. I've only been to one other tournament, and that (the Westchester Classic) did not have either Tiger or Phil, so the crowds were much smaller than they will be on Thursday. I'd like to see a decent chunk of Tiger's round and catch some of Phil's round in the afternoon. With this in mind, what strategy would you suggest? Can one see (I'm only 5'8") adequately if part of Tiger's gallery, if not right in front of the crowd? Are those periscope devices sold at the course, and do they work well? If we decide to follow Tiger for a while, and then sit in the bleachers for a while, where would be a good place to sit? Any other viewing tips will be greatly appreciated. By the way, I'm 61, which I guess might make a difference in your suggestions. Thank you very much. gumper P.S.- By any chance are there any areas with real bathroom facilities, as opposed to porta-potties?

following tiger is very difficult . i tried it several years back when he was at the buick ( westchester ) and did not have a good time . at the last open ( bethpage) i also had thursday tickets and set my self up to see a couple of tigers holes . for example if he is teeing off on 1 , get set up on 4 /5 if you want to see him in action . i would choose tee box or putting green since it could be dificult to tell where he is going to hit his second shot from . you may have to sit thru some lesser names but everyone playing in the open is a pro and worth watching . once you get a spot , determine if you are in the middle of the sun if its hot you will be roasting . bathrooms could be tough .some of the hospitality tents have bathroom facilities but i dont know how welcoming they will be. use the facilities and then find a spot . if you want to get a good perspective and plan on spending the whole day there . follow one of the players for a few holes . there are plenty of big names that dont have parades following them . you really get a feel for how they play a course . enjoy it wish i was there but i have little league baseball all week .

Its the only way you will get close, although I was able to figure out a decent landing area to see the second shot. If you try to follow him all day, you will be elbow to elbow with a lot of people, and moving with a huge crowd every single shot. I hate this, it drives me nuts.

from today's NY Times on good observation points " The bleachers on the par 3 17th, standing to left of 15th green because the green is tough and you can see 16 from there, the par 5 4th hole, or the par 3 eighth which will have interesting pin placements." On arrival there will be a course map for navigation. I am going tomorrow so will report any good areas. Weather supposed to be nice on Wednesday.

Thank you all. Enjoy the practice round. Next time, that's when I'll go, but this time I want the excitement of watching a major. gumper
