Thank you for posting the link. The tournament has been on TV here in years past and I have always enjoyed watching it but it was replaced by the new LPGA tournament this year which was also interesting and enjoyable.Always a very good field for the Aussie open.
Were you at the tournament to watch these great players this weekend?
Thanks once again for posting the results.

Yes I was disapointed that the Golf Channel didn't carry this tournament as they had in years past. I know that they carried most of the LPGA tournament & the tournament from China that Tiger was in, but the Australian Open used to be some great late night/early morning golf watching!

Unfortunately no, I was not at this event. It is my dream to go to a PGA event.
It was great to watch on tv, and we had very good commentators.
Greg Norman made the cut, and he still has that star power. He had crowds 5 deep, following him everyday.

That's a very strong top 5. I haven't heard of Gavin Coles, but those other guys are no slouches.

By the way, here's a little anecdote about a Canadian golfer playing in the Australian Masters:

George Knudson, a free-spirited Canadian, had done quite well over the first three rounds of the 1969 Australian Masters tournament, played at the Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne, and decided he deserved a night on the town. His celebrations climbed to man-sized proportions.

The next day, well along in the fourth round, George suddenly collapsed on the course. With thoughts of cardiac arrest flashing through their minds, medics rushed to him a pumped him full of oxygen. Knudson revived, claimed that all was well, continued his game and won the tournament by two strokes.

wishicouldhit, On my next trip there, I hope to be able to pay a round or two on one of your courses.

Stayed at a rustic hotel in Beryl NSW and there was a course across the road. I did not inquire about rental clubs as I assumed that the irons would all be standard L/L/L. May have to lug along my own irons (3* up and +1 inch) and rely on rental Driver and FWs.

Went up to Port Douglas. Truly a beautiful spot.

Port Douglas is my home town, I basically grew up there, and I still work there. I now live 10 minutes up the road, at a little beachside suburb. Darn it, we could have had a game of golf together.

My wife and several co-workers were in Brisbane last month. That was her first trip there and she was blown away by the fabulous city. Hope to get back to your country on one of my wife's future trips when we can combine it with a holiday after she completes her assignments.

Cheers

Gavin Coles is a fantastic player, he has kicked around the Nationwide and PGA tours for a couple of years and is going back to the Show in 07. He won on the Nationwide in 02 and that put him on the tour in 03 where he was awful. That is quite normal for a first timer in the show let alone pretty much a first timer in north america. Most tour pros admit that it takes a couple times at each tour stop to get to know the courses and get that imporant stroke a round advantage that is a must to sucseed. In 05 he had his second shot on tour (again a good year on the Nwide) and won 350K including a top 10 in Houston (7th including a disarter of a 75 in the last round) He is almost 40 and perhaps a bit of a late bloomer but I feel its his time and will be top 75 on the PGA tour this year. If you want to watch some real solid ball stiking go watch Gavin. What is impressive is 3yrs on the Nwide and 3 times he has moved up to the PGA tour. I dont know if anyone else has ever done that, they may have but I dont know of anyone else (a few have made it 3 times but 3yrs and 3 advancments is fantastic against a tough a tour as the Nwide.

The great thing about watching the PGA tour of Australasia is the amazing shape of the golf courses. I have never seen bunker lips shaved as tightly as they are on that tour. The areas around greens are amazingly tight and chipping is very tough around those greens.

Its also great watching Jack Newton and Brett Officer (Brett and his brother Mark were solid players on the Canadian tour in the late 80s. For brothers they were like night and day on the golf course)

Brett Officer is now the pro on my favourite tv show called "The Golf Show", and gives out tips each week, and I know his brother is a pro at a golf club on the Gold Coast in Qld. Jack Newton, well I think everybody knows what happened to him (Plane Propeller), he now does a lot of Australian Golf Commentary, he is very good at it, but he always sounds like a grumpy old fella, to me.

Jack has a voice all of his own, what a shame about the accident. Nice to see the Officers doing well. I remember Mark told me he would never work at a golf course. Funny how things change when you need a pay cheque. I here a club job in Australia is not as good as in the USA. Australian club pros have told me some of the members treat them like dirt, dont know if its true but that is how the players feel.

This time last year, we were at the Gold Coast, and Emma who organised our golfing holiday, was trying to arrange for Mark Officer to have a game with us and give us some lessons.(didn't happen, unfortunately), she said that he was a better golfer than Brett.
