It just seems to me that the TM r500 series driver heads (r510 tp, r540, r580, r540xd, r580xd, etc) are better performers than the newer R5/R7 heads. Anyone else feel this way?

I own many r500 series drivers, along with a r5 dual tp and r7 425. I'm trying to love my new r7 425 but it just seems that my current driver (r580 tour 9*) is so much more forgiving. Off center hits on the r7 425 feel marginal, as compared to the r580 which feels much better on similar contact. The r5 dual tp feels similar to the r7 to me. I love the ability to change weights in the r5 and r7 for swingweighting, but I hate to give up the sweet feel of the r500s. Maybe I should stick with the r500s and lead tape

I just bought a r510 tp (..it's in the mail) so I'm looking forward to trying that. I hear that's one of the best TM has produced.

Hmm, Im kinda the opposite. Owned the 540, 510tp, 580xd.... r7 original, r5tp, r7 460...

I thought the original r7 was by far the best out of all TM's Ive tried. Long, awesome 'crack' feel, forgiving enough. The 500 series, it never felt like I could 'hit it on the knuts...' Even the much heralded 510tp. The r7 is as good as it gets, maybe one day Ill own another (tp version, square face). The r5 is ok but I dont seem to do any better with larger heads, and I though the 460 was just flat out crap. Weird stuff. Rock on r7's!

JNewsted,

What's your swingspeed with the driver? Mine is 105mph. Maybe the r7 likes higher clubhead speeds...

I hit several models (some friends and a couple of demo's) and prefer the R580. I did not find a lot of difference in distance between the models. I preferred the 580 based on feel and better control.

My swing speed is 103-105 on average.

Nope, think they are all good sticks with the right shaft. The stock shafts of all of those sticks are all over the place, even the different premium shafts in the TP's. Once I had the Diamana pulled out of the r5 TP and a Fuji SIX inserted it became the club I really wanted. (Matches the r7 TP setup that I had been playing). To me it is great to be able to modify the weight of the club as my swing drifts around depending on how many time a week I'm playing/practicing. (Winter bites and its been a terrible fall in the midwest so far).

But have fun, it looks like you have a lot of good toys to play with....

I don't know what to say, but my r7 425 feels/sounds like an aluminum baseball bat. The performance is ok, but the sound/feel is not what I'm looking for. Added rubber washers under the weights with little change. I'll probably stick to the 500s...

I have an R510tp with a 1 degree open face angle, and it is by far the best driver head I have ever used. The only head that came close was an R7tp (quad).

I tried the R580, R540XD, R580XD,R7, and R5. The R580 was the only keeper in the bunch for me and is currently my backup to the G2. Its all up to the individual though as some of my friends have the newer TMs and hit them very well and love 'em.

I like, in order:

R7 460
R580XD
R5
R7 425
rest of the R500 series
R7

I just think the feel and sound fo the R7 series (below the 460) is dead and lifeless. The 580Xd feels most lively to me, with the R5 dead-feeling, but very forgiving, and a bit of a compromise, so to speak, between the live R580XD and the original R7. The only reason I could see someone using the original R7 was for the weights, because I never could get good distance out of it, and it felt like crap. (I'm a high swing speed hitter).

Just received my r510 tp today. All I can say is WOW!! The best feeling Taylor made head I've ever hit. Slightly more solid feeling than my r580 tour. IMHO, the r7 425 and r5 tp are not even in the same ballpark.

Yep, My Tour Issue R510 TP and Tour Spec 757 Speeder combo will have to be pried from my cold, dead, fingers.

Dead center face contact feels like hitting a railroad spike with a 16 lb. sledgehammer.
