How can I tell if my ferrule is slipping up the shaft, or the head is slowly coming off? I've tried to move both the head and the ferrule, but neither will budge.

If neither are moving, maybe the install was a little sloppy. How can I get the head and the ferrule back together again?

It's about 99.99999% likely that it's simply ferrule creep. Heads don't come loose incrementally, if the epxoy was bad enough for the head to slip it would come off pretty easily. Ferrules though can be REALLY tight and still slip up the shaft. They might feel solid and be a **** to get back into place, but they're usually doable. Use a putty knife or screwdriver with a hammer. Use the flat edge of the knife against the top of the ferrule and gently try to hammer the ferrule back down the shaft. Hit it briefly with a blow drier if it's really stubborn. That almost always works.

What about the club length?

I had the 0.000001% case:

I've left a driver in my trunk on a sunny day here in Austin, and when I went to get the club to hit at the range, I've noticed a space between the head and the ferrule, just about 1/4". And that was the head that moved, not the ferrule. I was able to push it back. I did not hit the club that day.
The next morning, because the club temparature was down to ~ 70* (it was probably more than 180* in the trunk the afternoon before), I was not able to move the head or the ferrule.

I've cut the ferrule, extracted the head, clean up and epoxied it back. No problem since then, but I try to not leave a club in my trunk anymore.

Check the alignment of the grip, shaft graphics/labels relative to the club face angle. If different the the head is loose. If unsure be safe and remove the head and reglue.

Check the epoxy bead. If you see the epoxy bead attached to the ferrule, your head has usually come loose. If the epoxy bead is still attached on top of the hosel, usually the ferrule has come loose. Consider this an indicator, but not always true.

Heat the head, pull the shaft and re-assemble if the head. Won't take much heat if the head is loose.

I have found that players who hit graphite shafted clubs hard and often during the summer...like three or more rounds a week...will eventually break the epoxy bond if traditional shafting epoxy was used. And, particularly if they pound the ground with the club head.

Another possible cause to check out...Mouse glue is used for eliminating rattles in a lot of heads. If used in conjunction with a plastic hosel plug, I've had several instances where the glue was made more liquid by a hot sun and with the golf club head-up, as in a golf bag, the glue worked its way down around the club and between the epoxy and hosel over time, eventually releasing the head like oil was used instead of epoxy. Had a Cydonia 3W I made 6 years ago slide off like that last week. It's easy to spot, because the shaft tip is undamaged and feels greasy-sticky.

I'm guessing that it was the ferrel that moved. Since a head that's come loose will in most cases twist off in your hands, or would have during a shot - and since ferrels, despite their tight fit and appearance of immovability, do have a reputation for creaping up shafts.....

And it's why, a long time ago, that I made a habit of over-sizing (by boring out) every ferrel and epoxying them to the shaft during assembly.......... never had one shift or move since.

I use a wire brush on the inside of the ferule to give the epoxy something to grab. I'd say the odds of the head coming loose instead of the ferule slipping are at least 25%, keep an eye on that head.
