GameMaker -> What's the effect of shorting the shaft of a driver? (04/29/12 7:28:41 PM)

What's the effect of shorting the shaft of a driver by 2 to 3 inches? I know it's suppose to make it easier to hit. does it stiffen the shaft?
The for dummies version please.

you may get electrocuted.

I was shorted in the shaft once. When I was born.[sm=crying5.gif]

Seriously though, GM......in a nutshell, any time you shorten a shaft, whether it is from the tip or from the butt, it will become stiffer.

If trimming the butt it should stiffen the shaft, but also remove weight that would need to be added back to the head to keep the swing weight the same. Adding weight to the head softens the shaft. I would suggest that if you hit a 3w or 5w more consistent then a driver try shortening the driver a little at a time until you gain consistent contact.

Just remember a bad swing no matter how short the shaft will still go astray!

I cut my driver down to 44.5 and in 5 rounds this year hit 80% of fairways, up
from 50 last year. I still hit them the same length, but in the short grass.

Its a very general statement to say that shortening the driver will result in better driving accuracy. I could give you further anecdotal evidence against it, if you want it. Its definitely worth trying out particularly if you are struggling off the tee currently. The message about adding weight back to the head is an important one. Anytime you shorten a beam, it will always make it stiffer. You need to add weight to maintain flex and feel. This is one proper way to use swingweight...fine tuning flex. It may not be perfect, but it will get you close enough. You need to add enough weight to get the swingweight back up to what you are used to, or at least in the ball park. For a driver, its about 10g per inch approximate.

Thank you guys! Yes i'm having trouble hitting my driver, I hit everything else fairly well. after measuring my driver i tried choking way, & i mean way up and i seemed to be hitting the ball straight on a few practice hits. so i'm thinking of shorting my driver or geting a shorter one.

Well, I just got schooled. I was told that cutting from the butt end will make it weaker, due the grip being the stiffest area of the shaft. Hence, tip trimming, cuts more of the smaller diameter portion of the shaft away. It was explained that taking away the weaker portion would take more "whip" out of the shaft. If cutting off the grip end will make it stiffer, then I am going to keep the shaft in my AF1 and just trim it. Learned something today, and any day that you learn something is a good day...

In simplest terms, take 2 ordinary toothpicks. The 1st one, just break it in half. The 2nd one, cut it in two. Now, break 1 of those pieces. Which was stiffer when beaking? Same type toothpicks, same type wood, made the same way....and you just broke them at the thickest, heaviest section.

Your theory isn't completely way off base. On just about every shaft, trimming the tip 1.5" will result in a stiffer shaft than trimming the butt by the same amount. However, the shaft will never get weaker when you shorten it, even from the stiffer butt section.

All I know is that for me a shorter driver shaft, no loss of distance and more fairways.
I did not add any weight to the head. I like the lighter feel of the driver.
Stiffness, I did not feel any difference.
