I know, I know, it's all about the money. But do they really need an event almost every weekend? I sure would pay a lot more attention if they didn't have so many tournaments.

There isn't a single thread about last weekend's event....probably because almost none of the notables were in the field. I flipped to it a few times but didn't watch more than 1/2 hour on any day. It didn't help that it was a runaway, but I wouldn't have watched more than the last hour even if there were more guys in contention.

There's been talk of forcing the big names to play "lesser" tournaments here and there, but that will never fly.

Am I the only one who would watch more if they had 20 events instead of 40+?

No one watches all 40 or even tries to. Something always comes up, or the tournament is just boring and people find something else to watch or do. Imagine if they only had 20 and you could only possibly watch 10 due to other commitments/activities. You would actually be watching less than you want to watch.

Wow, I watched it(via DVR). I never took note that the notables weren't there.

FrankoSport -> PGA tour schedule-format changes (04/16/12 4:14:32 PM)

Greetings ....

Back during the first glory days of Tiger in the late 1990s, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem approved the sanctioning of more tournaments, official or otherwise, than the 365-day, 52-week calendar could handle. I have done some hypothetical figuring and have determined the PGA Tour should have no more than 40 official events contested each year. The tournaments that leave the schedule could be handed off to not one but perhaps two or even three tours -- Nationwide, Champions and/or LPGA.

Also, if Q-School is indeed going to be phased out and the Nationwide Tour is to be relied on even more, then the exemption categories need to be re-done so that only the Top 90 Money Leaders (rather than Top 125) are fully exempt, and several other categories added or revised to provide more playing opportunities for Nationwide Tour members. One of my personal ideas is the creation of a category where certain eligible current year Nationwide players can get into PGA Tour events, then possibly go on to achieve Special Temporary Member Status and then perhaps Top 90 fully exempt status for the next season. Of course making Top 90 Equivilancy vs Top 125 would be a considerable task, but with heart, soul, dedication and determination it could be done.

Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Sport

There are many events that I ONLY catch up on daily so I can modify my Fantasy Team entries if needed (like the RBC). This time of year, I'd rather be outside during telecasts anyway. I am, however, glued to my recliner during the Majors. There are plenty of events that I would not watch at all if I didn't have a Fantasy Team in the FGI league.

IMO, very few watch all 40 events because very few want to. I watch football on Sundays from the moment it starts until the moment it ends. If they played 32 games a year I wouldn't do that, it's over-saturation. Everything means a little bit less.

When I sit down to watch a big tournament, the reason is because my watching of the tournament is the commitment, not because something else got in the way or I had nothing better to do.

Half the events, better fields, more anticipation - I would watch more, not less.

Notables were there. (now former)#1 Luke Donald was there....in name only. Ernie Els was there.....for 2 days; and this is the guy everyone was wanting to get in the Masters(??)!! Kyle Stanley was there...at least I saw his name in the paper.

Tough course for those that spray the ball off the tee. Even the winner was doing it, but he out putted everyone the whole 4 days. And (to me) was no 'surprise' winner after showing great form 2 weeks prior--these are the guys to watch.....not 'the notables'. Like racehorses coming into form, they are the ones to watch every week because they will beat the best when they peak. Watch Knost--spraying the ball everywhere....missing greens all weekend. Still finished strong.....he's getting ready to light it up.

My biggest beef with the schedule is that the season starts way too early and goes on for too long. I wouldn't mind a condensed 30 week/7 month schedule starting in March going through September.

Frank the nationwide already gets battle field promotion to the big tour when they win their third event of a season. Also they can Monday qualify finish in the top ten, (Dicky Pride is on a roll) for an automatic to the next event. Upon accumulating a certain amount of money depending on the time of year they can qualify for temporary membership. I think Hansen from the Euro tour did qualify this way this season or is very close.

Can you expand on your idea of certain Nationwide players getting into PGA events? Something like if you win a nationwide event you get an invite to certain PGA events remaining?

I too DVR'ed this event. I do enjoy this course as it puts a real emphasis on ball striking skill. super tight fairways, choked even further by trees, greens half the size of normal PGA tour greens. Many stay away from this event as its after a major, quite a shame as it is really a great test of golf, deserves a "better" field.

Greetings ...

Yo, Golf-Is-A-4-Letter Word ....

My suggestion is that any one or two time Nationwide Tour event winner, plus anyone among the Nationwide Top 15 Money leaders, would get access to regular open PGA Tour events, albeit on a limited basis. If such players achieve Special Temporary Member status, they can then accept unlimited sponsor invites to any regular open or invitational event, which would give such players the chance to earn their way onto the Tour for the next year.

If my suggestion were actual fact, it would be an additional category, besides those covering Nationwide 3-time winners and Top 25 Money Leaders (Top 30 in my scenarios), placed directly below the Special Temporary Member category.

I've sent you a private message which elaborates further.

Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Sport

I think this would be a great improvement as well. It's tough to convince me the season ever "ends". I still think 30 weeks is too much, but it beat 42 or whatever it is now.
